So long, Rodrigo Blankenship — you and your rec specs are no longer part of weekly fantasy kicker rankings. Harrison Butker is also “questionable” to return to our Week 3 edition, shaking things up at the top. Who knew kicker would be so exciting this early in the season?
OK, it’s not exciting at all, but both Blankenship’s demotion and Butker’s injury actually mattered to some owners last week. That’s more than we can say for most kickers right now, as most fantasy owners are still in wait-and-see mode with their kicker, regardless of how they’ve fared in the first two weeks.
That’s probably the right strategy. The more proven kickers should bounce back assuming they’re on decent teams. Every year, we see a couple breakouts, and early on, Cade York (vs. Steelers in Week 3) and Riley Patterson (@ Chargers) might be on that trajectory. Beyond them, Greg Joseph (vs. Lions) and Austin Seibert (@ Vikings) also outperforming preseason expectations. Kicker performances can fluctuate wildly from week-to-week, but these are still guys to watch if they continue getting opportunities.
WEEK 3 PPR RANKINGS:
QBs | RBs | WRs | TEs | D/STs
Plenty of guys should bounce back from poor opening games. Matt Prater (vs. Rams), Matt Gay (@ Cardinals), Justin Tucker (@ Patriots), and Tyler Bass (@ Dolphins) should all start getting more scoring opportunities soon, but the good news with all of these guys is there will usually at least be PATs. Also, Gay and Prater kick indoors this week, which is always a plus.
WEEK 3 STANDARD RANKINGS:
QBs | RBs | WRs | TEs | D/STs
Greg Joseph (vs. Lions), Patterson (@ Chargers), Butker (@ Colts), and Dustin Hopkins (vs. Jaguars) are the other notable kickers playing in stadiums with a roof in Week 3. One way or another, they should have optimal kicking conditions.
We still can’t say much about matchups in general, especially kicker matchups, but as we learn more, we can begin to tailor our rankings. For now, we’re focusing more on the kickers themselves and their offenses. This position is always a coin flip, so you’re always best off avoiding bad weather and trusting a kicker on a decent offense. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t, but at least you’re giving yourself the best chance a high floor.
We’ll be updating our kicker rankings as needed throughout the week, so check back for the latest changes.
