Five Key Players Withdraw from England’s Nations League Squad

Date:

England manager Thomas Tuchel faces significant squad changes ahead of the upcoming Nations League fixtures, with five prominent players withdrawing due to injuries. Cole Palmer, Declan Rice, Kobbie Mainoo, Marcus Rashford, and Tino Livramento have all pulled out of the national team, prompting the call-up of Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White and Everton’s James Garner. These adjustments come as England prepares for an extended international break, with matches against Spain, the Czech Republic, and Croatia.

The withdrawals were confirmed today, September 21, 2026, ahead of the Three Lions’ first match against World Cup winners Spain at Wembley on Saturday, September 26. Following this, England will travel to face the Czech Republic on September 29 and Croatia on October 3, before returning home to host the Czechs again on October 6. The England medical department and their counterparts at the respective clubs collectively agreed to the players’ withdrawals, although specific injury details have not been publicly disclosed by media outlets.

Morgan Gibbs-White, aged 26, brings six international caps to the squad and was reportedly close to initial selection, as noted by Tuchel on Friday. James Garner, who has two senior England appearances from March, joins him. Both players were not part of the 2026 World Cup squad.

Player Injury Details and Recent Form

Cole Palmer, 24, had been controversially omitted from England’s World Cup squad but was recalled by Tuchel for this international cycle. He has now withdrawn with a minor injury, despite playing the full match for Chelsea in their 3-0 defeat at Brentford on Friday. Palmer has started six of Chelsea’s seven games this season, playing the full 90 minutes in five, contributing four goals and two assists. The Guardian reported he has felt a minor muscle issue, and he previously dealt with a recurring groin injury in the 2025-26 season.

Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice, who played the entirety of his club’s 3-0 defeat by Brighton, is also unavailable. The BBC noted that Rice played 69 games for Arsenal and England last season, often managing a hamstring injury that affected him at the World Cup. The Guardian further specified a nerve issue in his hamstring affecting his lower back, and despite playing 549 of 630 possible minutes for Arsenal this term, a rest was deemed the wisest course of action.

Manchester United duo Marcus Rashford, 28, and Kobbie Mainoo were both substituted in the closing stages of their club’s 1-1 draw at Fulham on Sunday. Rashford was seen holding his hip and groin area as he left the pitch. Tuchel had previously championed Rashford, recalling him during a period of poor form last year, but used him sparingly after a poor performance at the World Cup against the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Mainoo was also part of the World Cup squad but did not feature in any matches. His manager, Michael Carrick, substituted him after 80 minutes against Fulham, a move that drew boos from travelling supporters.

Newcastle full-back Tino Livramento, 23, who sustained a calf injury on the eve of the World Cup and underwent surgery, has also pulled out. He has been limited to three substitute appearances for Newcastle this season, and the BBC reported a knee injury before Newcastle’s game against Hull on Saturday. Livramento has yet to start a game this season for his club.

Implications for England and Player Welfare

These numerous withdrawals pose a significant challenge for Thomas Tuchel as he embarks on a new international cycle intended to culminate in Euro 2028. The early stages of this cycle are now marked by disrupted preparations and forced changes, testing the depth and adaptability of the squad. Tuchel had previously stated that Palmer had a ‘point to prove’ and needed ‘to step up’ to ‘keep his shirt and justify the nomination’, making his withdrawal particularly notable.

The continuous strain on top-tier footballers, balancing demanding club schedules with international commitments, frequently brings player welfare into sharp focus. High-profile injuries for key players like Rice and Palmer, who have had extensive workloads or pre-existing issues, underscore the physical toll of modern football. For international audiences, this situation highlights the ongoing debate between club interests and national team demands, especially during extended international breaks, which can impact player availability for crucial club matches post-break, affecting leagues across Europe.

As the squad prepares to assemble on Tuesday, the focus will shift to how the newly called-up players, Gibbs-White and Garner, integrate into Tuchel’s plans. Gibbs-White is expected to provide options in the number 10 position in Palmer’s absence, while Garner steps in as a central midfield replacement for Rice and Mainoo. Tuchel also has Jude Bellingham, Morgan Rogers, and Eberechi Eze as other number 10 options.

Looking ahead, the performance of the new additions and Tuchel’s tactical adjustments will be crucial for England’s Nations League campaign. Observers will also be watching the recovery timelines of the injured players, as their return to fitness will be vital for both their clubs and future international call-ups in the run-up to Euro 2028.
