Thankfully, all was not lost. Unwilling to give up, the sandwich enthusiast was forced to come up with a solution – and after trying the simple no-butter hack, the diner says they will never go back.

Sharing the secret to their tasty lunch on Reddit, the foodie revealed they spread mayonnaise over their sandwich. In a post to the foodhacks forum, the creative chef explained they had never meant to combine grilled cheese and mayo, but loved the result.

Recalling how they discoved the trick, the Reddit user wrote: “So recently I was wanting to make a Grilled Cheese sandwich. I went to the fridge to pull what I needed and that’s when I discovered I was out of butter. D***. I don’t wanna give up here.

“What the hell can I do ? I have pulled All the ingredients and was on my way to Grilled Cheese heaven. I looked and spotted some mayonnaise. That’s when the lightbulb went off!!!

“My ah ha moment. I quickly spread some mayonnaise in place of butter and did my normal routine. Let me end with this… I will never make grilled cheese any other way. I found my place in Grilled Cheese Heaven!!!” And it turns out the no-butter trick has many fans, though not everyone knows about it.

“I’m shocked people don’t know this,” read one reply. “I’ve been doing it for years and never looked back.” Confirming the hack works, another commenter wrote: “This is a known thing. Personally I like the taste of butter more, but it works in a pinch.”

“I’ve used mayo for years and have gotten many people to switch after trying mine,” revealed a third. Meanwhile, someone else suggested using olive oil. “I use olive oil, that lovely light butter note goes well with grilled cheese,” they wrote.

However, the tip is not for everyone, as a different responder said: “There have been several campaigns over the years from the Mayo companies trying to get people to switch. I find that it does crisp up the bread nicely but for me, butter adds flavor that I miss when using Mayo.”
