Former Eastern Michigan University associate provost and associate vice president for academic programming and strategy Michael Tew was sentenced Dec. 16 for driving around Dearborn naked, and masturbating.
He was sentenced to three years probation and mandatory treatment for sexual offenders.
Tew, 62, was still employed by EMU when he was arrested and charged in September. He was allowed to retire while the case was moving through the courts.
He was arrested Sept. 7 after a short investigation, and arraigned on one count of felony indecent exposure/sexually delinquent person, and one misdemeanor count of aggravated indecent exposure.
He is a Dearborn resident.
EMU issued a statement when Tew was arrested.
“We are troubled and concerned about this reported incident,” EMU spokesman Walter Kraft said. “Upon learning about this matter from Dearborn police yesterday, the university took immediate action and suspended the individual indefinitely, pending the outcome of the investigation and legal proceedings. They are not permitted to come to campus during the suspension. We are not aware of any inappropriate conduct or actions of this nature related to their work on campus.”
No updated statement was released either when Tew retired, or when he was sentenced.
Tew had been employed by the college since 1981.
According to RateMyProfessor.com, Tew was well-liked as a professor. He was rated 26 times on the site, with a 4.4 out of 5 overall rating.
Witnesses to the man’s actions over the Labor Day weekend were able to get his license plate number and call police, who tracked him down and arrested him.
“I am very remorseful for what I did, I accept responsibility for it and I apologize,” Tew said in court Friday.
