All eyes will be on France to see how their injury-ravaged squad handles their 2022 FIFA World Cup opener against Australia.
As Didier Deschamps aims to defend their title from four years ago and get over the latest injury blow with star man Karim Benzema ruled out, he’ll insist dropping points against Australia isn’t an option.
As for the Socceroos, with matches against Denmark and Tunisia to come they’ll be hoping to find their feet against France in order to best prepare them for two much more winnable games on paper.

France vs. Australia live updates, highlights from 2022 World Cup
81 mins: There’s no let-up from France here, Kylian Mbappe leading the charge once more down the left. It looks to be opening up for the shot, but instead he tries to find Olivier Giroud at the far post and Australia can get it away.
76 mins: Didier Deschamps also takes the opportunity to give Aurelien Tchouameni and Ousmane Dembele a rest, Youssouf Fofana and Kingsley Coman coming on for the final 15 minutes or so.
74 mins: A double change for Australia, who are a beaten side now. Garang Kuol and Awer Mabil are on, Kuol becoming the Socceroos’ youngest World Cup player aged 18 years and 68 days.
GOAL! 71 mins: Olivier Giroud has matched Thierry Henry’s record of 51 goals for France, and it’s a trademark header at the far post. Kylian Mbappe is the architect, isolating Nathaniel Atkinson on the left and breaking past the full-back before standing the cross up to leave Giroud with a simple header.

GOAL! 68 mins: After Antoine Griezmann has a shot cleared off the line and Kylian Mbappe flashes one effort across the face of goal, Les Bleus’ pressure has finally paid off. Ousmane Dembele collects Mbappe’s wayward shot and works space for the cross, landing the ball on the head of his strike partner who nods past the exposed Mat Ryan.

65 mins: France look to be biding their time here – they’re moving the ball around and probing for a gap. Australia are trying to stay narrow and compact and force FRance wide to defend the crosses.
62 mins: Crucial tackle from Kye Rowles, who times a sliding challenge on Kylian Mbappe perfectly as the France striker was looking to unleash a shot from inside the area. A quick move from France looked to have unlocked the defence.
60 mins: France’s tempo has dropped in the last few moments, while Australia look to be aiming to stay in the game just at the minute.
Great support for both sides in the stadium.

56 mins: That’s pretty much Mitchell Duke’s last contribution of the evening; he’s off for Jason Cummings in Australia’s first change.
54 mins: First yellow card of the evening as Mitchell Duke overruns the ball after a good spell of Australian possession and scythes down Ousmane Dembele in trying to retrieve it.
50 mins: The second half has picked up where the first left off, with France on the front foot. Theo Hernandez gets away down the left and pulls the ball back for Aurelien Tchouameni, whose shot is charged down.
France recycle the ball and Hernandez gets another crossing chance. This time he picks out Olivier Giroud, who lines up a bicycle kick at the far post, but the acrobatic effort flies wide.
46 mins: We’re back underway as Australia get the second half started. Will they be able to find an equaliser? They’ve had their chances.

HALFTIME: The end of a pulsating first half and the holders have their noses in front – although they’ve had to come from behind to do it, Craig Goodwin smashing the Socceroos into an early lead. Two goals in six minutes from Adrien Rabiot and Olivier Giroud have turned it round for France, although they’ve shown enough susceptibility at the back for Australia to still believe they could spring a surprise here.

45+2 mins: How close for Australia now! Riley McGree does brilliantly down the left and lifts a cross back towards the fast-arriving Jackson Irvine, who heads it back the way it’s come – and a statuesque Hugo Lloris can only watch in relief as it clips his right-hand post.

45 mins: Something of a collector’s item here as Kylian Mbappe volleys over when it looked easier to score! Antoine Griezmann gets away down the right and plays in his team-mate but the PSG forward volleys over with the goal at his mercy!
We’re into the first of six minutes of stoppage time here.
43 mins: Australia really having to dig deep here to stay in this one. Ousmane Dembele, Kylian Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann link up to great effect once more, but this time the Atletico Madrid forward slices a shot wide.
42 mins: Olivier Giroud had never scored in 12 World Cup appearances before this evening, but he’s finally broken his duck here. See how he did it (UK only)

40 mins: Kylian Mbappe is absolutely cutting Australia to ribbons at the moment, bursting away yet again down the right. His low pass across the penalty area is slashed over by Ousmane Dembele, although Benjamin Pavard behind him might have been better placed.

GOAL! 32 mins: France are going through the gears now, and it’s 50 goals for his country for Olivier Giroud. Adrien Rabiot turns provider, latching on to Kylian Mbappe’s sumptuous flick and bursting into the area before unselfishly squaring to give Giroud a tap-in. Effortlessly simple from the holders, who have turned it round.
29 mins: It’s all France now and Australia are unable to get either ball or out of their own penalty area. Antoine Griezmann provides the delivery this time, Olivier Giroud getting on the end of his left-wing cross but heading over, although the flag was up in any case.
GOAL! 27 mins: France are back on terms, they’ve had Australia penned back in the last few minutes and they’re back on terms now. The Socceroos fail to clear a corner properly and Theo Hernandez whips in a tantalising cross from the left that is met by Adrien Rabiot with a thumping header that gives Mat Ryan no chance. All square again!
22 mins: Sloppy from France and it’s a letoff for Theo Hernandez, whose loose pass is pounced upon by Mitchell Duke. The striker lets fly from just outside the area, and the ball whistles just over Hugo Lloris’s crossbar.
20 mins: France are seeing plenty of the ball as they try to get back on terms, but Australia are working hard in defence and are shutting down space quickly.
16 mins: Everything is going through Kylian Mbappe for France as they try to respond to that early shock, but they’re looking a little ragged at the moment and are struggling to put much together.
And this is the goal that has put the holders behind (UK only)

12 mins: More trouble for France in the aftermath of that goal, Lucas Hernandez having fallen awkwardly in challenging Mathew Leckie in the build-up. The Bayern Munich left-back looks in real pain, and his brother Theo is on to take his place. Yet another injury for Didier Deschamps.
WHAT A FINISH. WHAT A START. #GiveIt100 #Socceroos #FIFAWorldCup pic.twitter.com/VIsblBSux2

GOAL! 9 mins: We have an early breakthrough – and it’s Australia who have got it! The move starts with a superb pass from the back by Harry Souttar, who plays in Mathew Leckie down the right. The low cross finds Craig Goodwin arriving fast at the far post, and the winger rifles high past Hugo Lloris.
5 mins: A first chance for Kylian Mbappe to stretch his legs now, skipping past Nathaniel Atkinson as if he wasn’t there. The French striker is crowded out eventually as he bursts into the area, but that’s an early warning for Australia; they can’t afford to leave Mbappe one-on-one.
3 mins: And now a first sight of goal for Australia, a pass making its way to Riley McGree about 25m from goal. The defence conveniently parts for the Middlesbrough man, but he drags his attempt well wide.
2 mins: No great surprise that France have had the lion’s share of the ball so far, with Kylian Mbappe already getting a chance to test the Australian defence down the left side. From the resulting corner Ousmane Dembele’s shot is charged down.
KICKOFF: With the pre-match formalities out of the way, Olivier Giroud – who’s only two goals away from equalling France’s all-time goal record – gets us started.

— Socceroos (@Socceroos) November 22, 2022
3 mins to kickoff: The teams emerge from the tunnel to a great ovation, and we’re just about ready to go. But first, the anthems.
5 mins to kickoff: Australia are making their sixth World Cup appearance, and a fifth in succession, but they have progressed from their group only once before, reaching the round of 16 in Germany in 2006. They have failed to win a game in each of the last two tournaments, losing five of those six matches.
Indeed, the Socceroos have recorded only two victories – and ten defeats – in their 16 World Cup finals fixtures, keeping only one clean sheet.
10 mins from kickoff: Mind you, France don’t look too shabby either! No side has retained the World Cup since Brazil in 1962 – France’s sole previous trophy defence ending in group-stage elimination in 2002, when they failed to win a game or even score a goal. Ouch.

25 mins from kickoff: It would be easy to focus on the France players who aren’t here this evening, with some absolutely massive names missing this tournament, but coach Didier Deschamps is calm in the eye of the storm.
“There’s no apprehension. We have done everything possible,” said the France coach. “There’s no anxiety, everyone is calm and there are cool heads.
“You think I can just click my fingers and someone can say, ‘OK, I will be a leader, I will give pep talks and lead the squad to victory’? No, it’s something that comes with time.”
35 mins from kickoff: The players have been out getting a feel for the pitch at the Al Janoub Stadium and, in the absence of Karim Benzema, much will rest on Antoine Griezmann’s shoulders this evening

45 mins from kickoff: For Australia, central defensive pairing Kye Rowles and Harry Souttar both start despite missing large chunks of the season due to injury.
Martin Boyle had to be withdrawn from the squad due to his knee injury, so Craig Goodwin gets a start on the right of midfield.
Graham Arnold has opted for a five-man midfield, with Mitchell Duke on his own up front.
50 mins from kickoff: With France’s starting midfielders N’Golo Kante and Paul Pogba both missing from the tournament, having struggled with long-term injuries since the summer, Adrien Rabiot and Aurelien Tchouameni start in midfield.
Didier Deschamps is also short in central defence, with Dayot Upamecano and Ibrahima Konate starting with Raphael Varane and Jules Kounde only fit enough for the bench and Presnel Kimpembe out of the tournament altogether.
Karim Benzema has been ruled out of the finals because of a thigh injury, so Olivier Giroud starts up front with Antoine Griezmann, Ousmane Dembele and the peerless Kylian Mbappe playing just behind him in what looks to be an attacking lineup.

3 hrs 45 from kickoff: As for Australia, opening tests don’t come much tougher than the reigning World Cup champions. However, Socceroos coach Graham Arnold has banned his players from using defeatist words in a bid to build confidence.
“I’ve banned the word ‘fatigued’ and I’ve banned the words ‘in pain’,” Arnold revealed in his pre-match press conference.
“This is the World Cup, there’s no such thing as being tired after a game or fatigued or having a bit of pain and stiffness: recover quickly and get on with it.
“It’s not being disrespectful at all but I’ve hardly mentioned the word France and I’ve hardly mentioned any players’ names,” the Socceroos boss added.
“The players know who they are, but it’s about identifying those players’ strengths and it’s one against one. It’s our job to go out there and show them who we are as a nation.
“The players have that stage, it’s their stage and this is an opportunity in life that can change your life even more than what they have now.”
With the #FIFAWorldCup opener on the horizon, Graham Arnold and @MatyRyan share a moment before our pre-match press conference. 🤗

4 hrs 30 from kickoff: Of course, that is the big omission and still a big talking point from today’s encounter, that the 2022 Ballon d’Or winner Benzema won’t be present.
He was ruled out after suffering a thigh injury during training with France and surprisingly Deschamps has chosen not to call up a replacement.
“I’ve got 25 players in my squad. I’m convinced I have the efficient number of players to be able to deal with the challenges we face,” said Deschamps about his decision.
“Before [in previous tournaments] we had 22, 23. Now it is 26 and we are at 25. There are lots of possibilities, lots of players on the bench and, therefore, I believe we have everything we need.”
4 hrs 30 from kickoff: Hello, and welcome to The Sporting News’ live coverage of France vs. Australia!
Australia’s chances have been boosted by the news of Karim Benzema being ruled out… now there’s just the small matter of Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele and Antoine Griezmann and more to worry about. It will certainly be a tough opening test for the Socceroos.
