Freaky Schools From Around the World That You Can’t Imagine

  • I’ll just say this, Trabajo Ya School.

These freaky schools will have you freaked. Honestly, though. Check out number three.

Karachi’s Mobile School Bus

Now this is not the worst idea, and helps to combine the classroom and the commute. It kind of gives school bus a new meaning, wouldn’t you agree? Usually we think of a big yellow vehicle that picks up our kids and gets them off to school. But in this case, think again. The Citizens Education Development Foundation has used new methods to achieve functional literacy, and this is one of them. This “school bus” tours the neighborhoods in shifts, with four class sessions of two hours each. And this services reaches about 160 students per day. This mobile school bus is offered to learners between the ages of five and 14. This mobile school bus relies almost entirely on volunteer contributions, with teachers only withdrawing a salary. This has caused the project no expansion and only to stay a float. Free electrical and water supplies are donated free of charge.

Harvey Milk High School

This LGBTQ+ school has created a safe space for students, regardless of their sexual orientation and gender identity. The school adopted the name after a California politician who helped promote gay rights in the 70s. He was also the first openly gay man to be elected into a public office in the US. Many anti-LGBTQ+ hate groups have tried to literally burn the building to the ground. The school is still in operation today and continues to offer an educational environment to it’s students, free of harassment, threats and violence.

Trabajo Ya School

This school is located in Valencia Spain and it offers a class to students which is ‘basic course in professional prostitution with maximum discretion’. Sex work is termed the oldest trade in existence and and there’s different levels of legislative and moral acceptance regarding it. This privately run school found itself under (understandable) scrutiny when the Valencian government set about a legal challenge against the school hoping to close the doors in 2012. The challenge was rejected by prosecutors soon after it began though and Trabajo Ya was allowed to continue admitting students into their school. A lot of the population would call this the freakiest of freaky schools.

Bangladesh’s Floating Schools

This isn’t just one school, but a category of schools. Bangladesh is a country prone to flooding and the educational system has had to overcome and adapt over the years. Severe and disruptive floods overtake the area at least twice a year so a local non-profit,  Shidhulai Swanirvar Sangstha, has built a series of schools that floats, on boats. All the features of a typical classroom are together under one roof, or hull, as it were. These floating learning centers function all-year-around. The boats grab learners from riverbanks and pontoons before docking to start their school day. Students are returned home before preparing for a new group of learners to climb aboard.

Salem Witch School

This school not only has its own format but also its own curriculum. This Salem Essex County Massachusetts offers students the chance to study witchcraft and magic. With more than 240,000 students already through this course, the school has had a considerable uptake. It’s a long way from Hogwarts but most students have been part-time learners and maybe surprisingly, have studied online on a distance-learning basis. This is undoubtably one of the most freaky schools.

Gulu Elementary School

This school was run by only one teacher, Shen Qijun. Students in this area have to climb for five hours, just to get to school in this mountainous region. They took the Luoma way, everyday, surpassing sharp turns and narrow passages on their way there. The school was shut down in November 2011 and the students and teacher were all relocated to a local school, below the mountains. They shut this down, it was one of the most freaky schools.

Forest Kindergartens

These schools are based on the German model of waldkindergartens or ‘forest preschool.’ The outdoor forest kindergartens educate children between the ages of three and six. The classes are entirely outside and all year around. These schools aim to help their children interact better with their surroundings. They want students to get in touch was nature and to build things using materials found in the forest. This wasn’t as much a freaky school as it was cool. Honestly though, what kids wouldn’t want to have school among the trees, in the sun?
