GM’s Driver-Assist Super Cruise Expansion Launches for Full-Size SUVs

General Motors announced(Opens in a new window) its hands-free driving network Super Cruise will be available to select full-size SUVs starting mid-November.

The news comes after the company doubled the Super Cruise road network to more than 400,000 miles of roads in the US and Canada.

The vehicles receiving the expansion are uniquely full-size SUVs built on Oct. 3 2022 or later. The full list of vehicles comprises the 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe (High Country & Premier trims), the 2023 Chevrolet Suburban (High Country and Premier trims), the 2023 Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, and Escalade-V, and the 2023 GMC Yukon Denali Ultimate.

Super Cruise launched in 2017 and isn’t a fully self-driving system which means drivers must remain attentive but can take their hands off the wheel. Infrared cameras ensure the driver stays aware of the highway as they may be asked to retake control of the vehicle at any time. The system uses a combination of cameras, GPS, sensors, and LiDAR mapping technology that keeps cars on the road, while Adaptive Cruise Control maintains speeds as well as a safe gap behind other cars on the road.

The company said that existing Super Cruise vehicles will receive the expanded road network “in the coming months” via over-the-air updates “at no additional charge.” They also revealed that Super Cruise is coming to 22 vehicles by the end of next year, while Ultra Cruise, which is in pre-production, will be made available later on “certain premium entries.”

In a statement on the expansion, the company said: “GM is committed to expanding access to advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), bringing these technologies to more vehicles on more roads, while prioritizing safe deployment. We want to help our customers expand their driving experience with these systems, which is why we’re laser-focused on testing, validating and improving our ADAS technologies to provide our customers with advanced features and systems — like the industry’s first true hands-free advanced driver assistance system, Super Cruise.”
