In a stunning announcement that has captured global attention, President Donald Trump revealed his administration’s latest immigration initiative on Tuesday – a “golden card” program offering a direct path to U.S. citizenship for those willing to pay a hefty $5 million price tag. This stunning program marks a significant shift in American immigration policy, prioritizing wealth over traditional pathways to residency.
– Golden Pathways –
“We’re going to sell a golden card. They have a green card, this is a golden card,” declared President Trump during his announcement. “We’ll price that card at about five million dollars, and that will give you the privileges of the green card, plus it will be a route to citizenship.”
The stunning initiative aims to attract what Trump described as “rich people” to American shores. “They’ll be rich and successful, and they’ll spend a lot of money and pay a lot of taxes and employ a lot of people. And we believe it will be extremely successful,” the President stated, adding that sales could begin “in about two weeks.”
The golden card represents a significant departure from America’s existing immigration framework, essentially creating a premium tier for those with sufficient financial resources to bypass traditional immigration channels. Critics have already begun questioning whether this represents a commodification of American citizenship, while supporters point to potential economic benefits.
– Economic Projections –
Trump’s financial projections for the program are ambitious by any measure. “We’ll be able to sell maybe a million of these cards, maybe more than that. And if you add up the numbers, they’re pretty good,” he continued. “If we sell 10 million cards, that’s a total of $50 trillion. Well, we have $35 trillion of debt. That would be great. […] Maybe it’s fantastic,” he suggested.
According to the President, the stunning new program is “somewhat like a green card, but at a higher level of sophistication.” He described it as “a path to citizenship for people, and essentially for wealthy people or people with great talent, where wealthy people pay for those talented people to come in, meaning companies will pay for people to come in and have long-term status in the country. And I think it’s something that makes us very, very happy.”
– Replacing Existing Programs –
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick explained that the golden card will replace EB-5 visas, which he characterized as being “filled with nonsense, fantasy, and fraud.” The EB-5 visas were created by the U.S. Congress in 1990 to generate foreign investment and are available to individuals who spend around one million dollars in a business that employs at least ten people, according to AP.
“Of course, [applicants] will have to go through a vetting,” Lutnick clarified. “We’re going to make sure they’re wonderful, world-class, global citizens. […] They can invest in the United States, and we can use that money to reduce our deficit,” Lutnick defended.
The stunning initiative represents a dramatic reimagining of how wealth and immigration intersect in American policy. While the administration frames the program as an economic boon that could potentially address national debt, immigration advocates question whether establishing such a direct correlation between wealth and citizenship aligns with traditional American values.
What remains to be seen is whether this golden opportunity for the wealthy will truly benefit the nation as a whole, or whether it simply represents a gilded path for the privileged few.
