Hair expert warns against at-home dyeing – as one woman shares two-year nightmare

The woman took to TikTok to explain why bleaching at home isn’t a great idea, and experts have warned against it as well, saying people who aren’t trained to bleach should not use it

An expert has warned against bleaching your hair at home if you’re not a professional after a woman has shared her two-year hair nightmare where her hair fell out in clumps because of the strong product. @ aimegx took to TikTok to show what happened to her hair after she decided to take matters into her own hands and bleach her own tresses.

At the start of the video, it says “this is your sign not to bleach your hair at home” as it shows her incredibly blonde hair. As the pictures progress, they get worse and worse with one of the photos showing her hairline at the front with chunks of hair missing.

The next photo showed clumps of her hair that had fallen out when she’d brushed her hair after accidentally overbleaching it trying to achieve the perfect look. The woman also showed her brush which had excess hair in it.

In the comments, she pointed out that this happened in lockdown, writing: “This was two years ago in lockdown and my hair has recovered it has a long way to go but I’m on a healthy hair journey!”

People were horrified for the woman, with one saying she was ‘crying’ for her.

One wrote: “I’ve done this so many times lol it will get healthy again don’t worry.”

“Been there done that. My hair falls out a lot now but it’s not too bad”, one said.

Ghanima Abdullah, hair expert and cosmetologist at therighthairstyles.com said that bleaching hair at home should not be attempted because it’s often stronger than bleach that is found at the salon.

Ghanima said: “Bleaching at home isn’t a good idea because the processing probably won’t be even, as bleaching is best left to the professionals.

“Then once you bleach, your hair is in such a weakened state that you can’t bleach again right away. So you’ll have to live with unevenly lightened hair.

“Bleaching also uses some of the harshest chemicals in the salon. A salon artist will take into consideration the condition of your hair before bleaching. They might even mix up a milder formula for you so the bleach doesn’t damage your hair. Unless you’re a cosmetologist, this is something you can’t do by yourself.

“At-home bleach kits are typically stronger than what you find in the salon. The brand wants to make sure it works for everyone, including those with healthy, coarse strands that need more processing.

“These kits can literally ruin your hair because they are so harsh and can’t take into consideration the hair condition and type of every person out there.”

Tim Scott-Wright, owner of The Hair Surgery hair salon said: “We find that most colour corrections we have in the salon are as a result of someone using bleach at home. You may think you are saving money by doing a DIY colour, but it will only cost you more in the long run when it needs correcting.”
