Chantel revealed we’ve been shampooing our hair all wrong

If having luscious, long locks if your dream, then listen up. A hairdresser has revealed the mistakes you’re making that could be damaging your hair.

Chantel Northcott, stylist at Emmie Hair salon in Perth, Scotland, uploaded a video to TikTok where she went through five things you need to know. Firstly, when you’re washing your hair and using shampoo, you should only scrub your roots, not your ends, says Chantel.

Professional hair stylist Monica Davis previously told Healthline: “The truth is that you have to focus on shampooing your scalp, rather than the ends of your hair. Apply shampoo only onto the scalp, and let it clean the rest of the hair when you rinse it out.”

Chantel continued her ‘five tips from a hairdresser’, saying: “When combing hair, always start at your ends and work up.”

According to a survey by hair brand Tangle Teezer, one of the biggest mistakes people make it brushing from the scalp down, which can lead to split ends, more knots and damaged hair.

Then, the stylist says that you should be applying “hair serum to your ends every day”. Not to be confused with hair oil, serum is a silicone-based product that is designed to add shine and smoothness.

Showing a hair straightener that is set at 180 degrees, Chantel reveals that you should never be using hair tools that are hotter than 200C degrees Anything above this can actually cause damage to your hair.

Lastly, the hairdresser recommends getting your “hair trimmed regularly to encourage growth”.

Taking to the comments, some were confused at how trimming your hair at the ends encourages it to grow.

One person answered: “If your ends are damaged, they are going to break at some point and wont grow past it. Your hair will grow from the roots but it will be stuck to the same length, if you don’t cut it will go higher and you will get uneven cut because the hair will keep breaking off becoming more thinner.”

Some people asked which hair serum the salon recommended, to which they replied: “L’Oréal mythic oil or metal detox!”.

Emmie Hair salon regularly shares tips to its 7.6k TikTok followers, with one previous video showing more mistakes we are making when it comes to our hair.

For example, if you comb your hair when it’s wet, you shouldn’t be using a normal brush but something like a Tangle Teezer.
