Holy cow! Wandering animal causes Tesla damage, chaos in Pleasanton

PLEASANTON — A cow that got loose from its property went on a stroll along a major avenue Wednesday, causing damage to a Tesla before ranchers summoned from another city lassoed it, police said.

The brown cow got out onto Bernal Avenue about 5:50 p.m. and was on the loose for more than an hour, Pleasanton city spokesperson Teri Yan said.

“We believe it was from a nearby property,” she said. “Generally speaking, there are properties in that area with (farm animals).”

A Tesla driver ran into the cow during its romp, but neither the cow nor the driver were injured. The Tesla suffered a shattered windshield and other damage.

The cow visited a McDonald’s parking lot, among other properties.

“It was running around exploring,” Yan said. “Going on a tour.”

Officers responded to Bernal Avenue at Stanley Boulevard and proceeded to follow the cow at about 5 mph, Yan said. They also were advised that two ranchers from Danville had expertise in such situations, and they summoned them.

At about 7 p.m., one of the ranchers lassoed the cow and brought it into a trailer. It was then returned to its property.

“One of the ranchers was on a horse, and that allowed him to get close enough,” Yan said. “Our department doesn’t have horses available.”

Yan said police controlled the traffic on Bernal Avenue during the incident, helping to detour vehicles around the cow.
