A sheriff’s office in Ohio yanked photos of its mounted unit from Facebook after some people misinterpreted the horses’ Halloween costumes.
They were supposed to be ghosts, not Klansmen, the sheriff said.
Lake County’s mounted deputies had gone out Monday to mingle with trick-or-treaters, and the horses were draped in sheets and wearing hoods with large eyeholes.
“Monday night when the pictures of the ghost horses were put on Facebook, there was an overwhelming positive reaction from residents,” Sheriff Frank Leonbruno said. “However, a few negative comments were posted on our Facebook page saying the horses were dressed as KKK.
“Since this was never our intention, we took down the posting so such misperceptions would not continue.”
The horses also wore strings of jack-o-lantern lights.
“When they were lit up at night, you could see they were all about Halloween and intended to be ghost horses,” Leonbruno said.
Lake County is just east of Cleveland and includes the suburban cities of Willoughby and Mentor.
