How Lamar Jackson’s potential Ravens extension is affected by Kyler Murray, Deshaun Watson contracts

Lamar Jackson wants the stacks to stack up.

The Ravens’ superstar quarterback is still in line for a big payday, and a recent report says that there are a few curveballs in negotiations, mainly in the way of fellow recently paid passers.

Describing contract talks as an “uphill battle,” Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer says that the Ravens offered Jackson more money than Kyler Murray on average annual value, but the organization doesn’t want to go the fully guaranteed route in the deal.

Browns passer Deshaun Watson inked a fully guaranteed five-year, $230 million pact with Cleveland, so any deal for Jackson may potentially mirror that.

“They’ve already offered him more than Kyler Murray got,” Glazer said Sunday. “But the Deshaun Watson deal throws things out of whack there, because I’m sure [Jackson] wants a fully guaranteed contract. I don’t see [the Ravens] wanting to do that.”

More money than Murray would mean that Jackson is going to make over $46.1 million on average annual value in a potential new deal. The hang up seems to be the guaranteed money in the contract, as Glazer mentioned. Such a deal would take some fun salary cap gymnastics.

Obviously, Jackson would be worth it: Franchise passers don’t come along often, and even fewer are 25-year-old former league MVPs and game-breaking talents.

Jackson recently set a Week 1 deadline for a contract extension, so either he’s going to be very rich in the near future, or very rich come free agency following the season.
