MORE: Explaining the Canelo vs. GGG controversy

GGG’s run left the boxing world clamoring for a showdown with Canelo Alvarez.

Fans patiently waited and got their wish in 2017 when the two finally squared off. It was the best vs. the best, and they delivered, fighting to a controversial split decision draw. A rematch was delayed a few months after Alvarez tested positive for the banned substance clenbuterol. While Canelo was unavailable, Golovkin defended the WBA, WBC, and IBO titles against Vanes Martirosyan, beating him via knockout.

In the rematch in 2018, Canelo won via majority decision in yet another hard-hitting, controversial fight. As a result, Golovkin lost his titles.

Golovkin then signed a six-fight deal with DAZN. He beat Steve Rolls via knockout in June 2019 on the first fight of the deal. In October of that year, Golovkin competed in a back-and-forth battle against Sergiy Derevyanchenko, beating him to win the vacant IBF and IBO middleweight titles.

Golovkin returned to action in 2020, beating Kamil Szeremeta to retain the titles. The COVID-19 pandemic and injuries halted Golovkin’s return to action. After numerous delays, he entered the ring this past April, beating Ryota Murata via TKO to win the WBA (Super) middleweight title.

Now, Golovkin will finally get his hands on Canelo. He will look to even the score while winning super-middleweight gold for the first time in his career.
