Huawei Reveals Smartwatch With Hidden Earbuds Inside

You might not have thought of carrying your earbuds inside your smartwatch before but it will be possible soon. Huawei confirmed that its latest smartwatch will contain a pair of wireless earbuds inside, called Watch Buds.

The Chinese company made the announcement on Weibo(Opens in a new window) on Wednesday and released a teaser video(Opens in a new window) promoting the smartwatch and its buds, also on the social media site.

The company had originally planned to tell all about the Watch Buds on Friday but Huawei postponed its planned official unveiling of the device due to a COVID-related complication, per a report(Opens in a new window) from The Register.

An early hands-on video(Opens in a new window) from QSQTechnology, shows the watch face flipping up to reveal a pair of earbuds. Tiny charging contacts are on show and it also appears that the earbuds attach to the watch through magnets.

According to Huawei Central(Opens in a new window), who obtained pre-release photos of the watch, its size is identical to the Watch GT series. Its newest watch GT 3 SE received an update this month. The update brought new features such as a new customizable watch face and a feature that allows users to take a photo of their outfit to match the watch face style to their outfit, as well as a quick reply feature for social media and video calling apps.

Notebookcheck.com reported(Opens in a new window) that Huawei has sought a European trademark for its “Watch Buds”, so they might potentially be making plans for a wider future release.

But don’t count on it coming near US shores any time soon. Last week, citing an “unacceptable risk” to national security, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC)  prohibited the importation or sale of communications equipment made by Huawei and ZTE.

Alongside Huawei and ZTE, the list of blocked companies includes Hytera, Hikvision, and Dahua Technology as well as all of their subsidiaries and affiliates.
