A system failure is currently causing havoc at US airports and hundreds of flights have been delayed while the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) attempts to identify and fix the fault.
As Reuters reports(Opens in a new window), over 400 flights so far have been delayed across the US due to an outage. An Air Traffic Control System Command Center advisory(Opens in a new window) was posted early this morning confirming the NOTAM (Notice to Air Missions) system had failed. The advisory states:
“The United States NOTAM System failed at 2028Z. Since then no new NOTAMs or amendments have been processed. Technicians are currently working to restore the system and there is no estimate for restoration of service at this time.”
According to the FAA, a NOTAM(Opens in a new window) is “a notice containing information essential to personnel concerned with flight operations but not known far enough in advance to be publicized by other means. It states the abnormal status of a component of the National Airspace System (NAS) – not the normal status.” They are therefore essential to the safety of flights across the US, as well as international flights attempting to land at a US airport.
