‘I hate my neighbours’ loud music – when I ask them to stop they turn the volume up’

A woman was infuriated with her neighbours when they played music so loud it made her ‘uncomfortable’ – and when she asked them to turn it down, they did the opposite

When living in a block of flats or a built-up area, we come to expect that there will be some level of noise to deal with – be it people working on DIY projects, children playing outside, or dogs barking. But while some noise is a given, we should also all be considerate to the people who live around us, and should take them into consideration when it comes to noises we can control, such as loud music.

One woman, however, has discovered that her neighbours don’t seem to care about the way their noise impacts the people around them – because not only did they ignore her request to quieten down, they actively went out of their way to do the opposite.

She wrote them a note to ask them to turn their music down

The woman claimed her neighbour’s music was so loud it made her and her pet “uncomfortable”, and she had been over to their front door to ask them to turn it down in person, but they couldn’t hear her knocking.

She then decided to slip a note under their door instead in an attempt to get their attention.

In a picture shared on Reddit, the note read: “Hi, I don’t mind music, but please tone down the bass. The vibration scares my pet and I need to work. I tried to knock on your door several times but you couldn’t hear me, so I’m leaving this note.”

When her neighbours read the note, they finally decided to take action – but opted to turn the music up even louder instead of turning it down as the woman had asked.

She captioned her post: “Apartment neighbour has been blasting music with full bass for hours, making myself and my pet uncomfortable. After knocking on their half-open door 8-10 times, they couldn’t hear me (that’s how loud it is). After I slid this note under their door, they turned it up.”

Commenters on the post encouraged the woman to file a noise complaint, while others simply said they understood her pain after dealing with the same problems when living in a flat.

One person said: “You were polite and nice by choosing to write a note and trying to reason with them, since that didn’t work, put in a noise complaint.”

While another added: “File a noise complaint. Look, being nice is a wonderful trait but gets you nowhere if the other party isn’t gonna do the same.”

And a third spoke of their own experience as they noted: “One reason I hated apartment living. I had an upstairs neighbour do this to me at night when I worked early. They would keep it going all hours, but it wasn’t loud outside, only between apartments.

“So, knowing he stayed up late and slept most of the morning, on my next day off I turned my speakers to the ceiling and blasted the heaviest music I had at full volume from 8 am until 1 pm. Later I was getting in my car and heard him call hey, I looked up and he said, ‘Gotcha bud, well played’. He never did play loud music after 11 again.”
