If your neighbour was being particularly noisy, you may feel inclined to confront them and ask them whether they’d be able to keep the noise down. Of course, you’d have to anticipate that you may not get the warmest reception when you speak to them, but one woman was particularly shocked by the reaction from her neighbour when she mentioned the loud sounds their dog was making.

She took to Reddit’s ‘neighbours from hell’ thread to say that she politely asked if they could ensure their pooch was a bit quieter as it’s constantly whining and howling and sounds distressed, but they told her to ‘go away’. As a result, the original poster felt like she had no choice but to report the dog to the animal protection services.

She wrote: “My neighbour owns a really loud dog who whines and howls all day so I went up to their front door to politely ask if they could keep their dog a little quieter and they rudely told me there’s nothing they could do about it and told me to go away.

“They also told me the dog has separation anxiety yet they keep the dog in their backyard 24/7 and give it no attention or exercise.

“So, I reported the dog to the animal protection services and council, and yesterday they turned up at our house and yelled and swore at us for reporting them.

“I am writing this as their dog is howling extremely loudly so they clearly haven’t done anything about it and I don’t know what to do in this situation.”

People sympathised with the woman, with people saying they should report the dog again.

They wrote: “Time to report them again”, but the original poster responded: “I really want to but I’m fearing for my safety at this point.”

Another said: “Record the dog howling and show not only how loud but for how long. Do this multiple times and send that along with your next report. Also, report any threats they make.”

“Record the dog’s distress and report again with recording”, someone added.

One Redditor said there wasn’t much they could do as long as the dog had food and shelter, but they said to keep a record of it, commenting: “Keep reporting it to animal control. As long as the dog has water and shelter and is in good health there is not much they can do aside from continuing to keep a record of it.”
