‘I won’t let my husband move in with me – unless he gets rid of his dog’

A woman has told her husband, ‘it’s us or the dog,’ after he went ahead and bought a dog against her wishes, despite their rented apartment having a strict no pet rule.

If you’ve ever owned a dog, you’ll know it’s a commitment that shouldn’t come lightly. Just like babies, our furry friends need near-round-the-clock care and they rely on us for absolutely everything, from food and walks to their emotional needs.

So, you can understand just how frustrated one woman was, when her husband went ahead and adopted a puppy – despite her feeling nowhere near ready for the responsibility. The woman had warned her husband that they didn’t have enough room for a pet dog while living in a small apartment with their three children, so she insisted they wait until they bought their own place. But he went ahead and got the dog anyway.

However, things went from bad to worse when she discovered her husband had lied about getting permission to have the dog in a rented apartment as they later found out the building had a strict no dog policy.

“His reasoning for going against me was that the dog was free as his mother gave him the dog and due to the breed usually being super expensive, he couldn’t pass it up,” the woman wrote on Reddit’s AITA forum.

Shortly afterwards, however, the family discovered they would be getting evicted from their apartment – not because of the dog – but because of increasing rent prices making it impossible for them to afford it.

The woman and her husband have 14 days left to find somewhere new to live, but luckily their landlord has been supportive and has agreed not to put the eviction on their record to make it easier for them to find a new place.

“We’ve been searching high and low but every single place that is available currently either has a strict no pets or is way too high priced for us. The only ones we can afford are the ones that say no pets,” she explained.

“I was asked by a landlord yesterday for a down payment for a three-bedroom apartment, $800 cheaper than we are paying currently and with school starting in a week, I need to jump on this now. We have gotten no other offers.”

Her husband wants to – once again – lie about having a dog, and simply sneak the animal into their rented accommodation, but she refuses.

“I’m not getting evicted over an animal that we should have waited to get in the first place. I told him he can’t move in with me unless he gets rid of the dog or sends it off with a family member until we buy a house,” she concluded.

“He is now trying to convince me to just move in with his family, which I won’t do. He says I’m being insensitive and am not empathetic to his love for this dog, which isn’t true but I also have to worry about my kids and their stability.”

After turning to Reddit to question whether she was justified in giving her husband the ultimatum, she was met with overwhelming support.

“I don’t want to jump right to ‘divorce him,’ but I also really want to jump right to ‘divorce him’,” one Reddit user commented.

“I’m an animal lover, but I would never risk my living situation just to have an animal around. Can’t he go volunteer at a local animal shelter or something?”

Another added: “My main red flag is that the husband has no problem lying to you, or to landlords just to get his way. I wouldn’t be surprised if the ‘free’ dog wasn’t free and just asked his mom to say that. The man seems to mostly care about what he wants.”
