‘I’m convinced my husband is messing with me – I’m installing cameras to catch him’

A woman who thinks her husband is playing tricks on her has said she’s putting cameras in her house to catch him in the act – even though it could damage her relationship

If you’ve ever walked into a room and completely forgotten why you wanted to be there in the first place, then you know what it’s like to think you’re losing your mind.

But for one woman, that feeling has been happening more and more frequently – although she believes her husband is the one to blame.

The woman explained her husband has been complaining recently about things she has forgotten to do, such as loading the dishwasher but not switching it on and leaving the oven on after cooking, even though she’s sure she has been remembering to do everything she’s supposed to be doing.

Now, the woman she believes it could be her husband who is turning off the dishwasher or switching the oven back on to play tricks on her, and has said she wants to set up a series of cameras in her house to record her husband when she’s not in the room.

She knows filming her spouse is “invading his privacy”, but believes that she’s doing it for a good cause as it will help her work out whether she really is forgetting important tasks.

In a post on Reddit, she wrote: “My husband is complaining about me forgetting things, like loading the dishwasher and not switching it on, or leaving the stove or oven on after cooking, or not putting things back in the fridge. Things I’m 95% sure I remembered to do. I’ll switch on the boiler for a hot bath, and an hour later it will be off. My husband says he didn’t touch it.

“Then this morning, I came to brush my teeth, and my toothbrush already had toothpaste on it. What the f**k? Did I do it earlier? Did I not brush my teeth last night? That’s just plain weird.

“I might be in denial or have paranoia, or I just read too much Reddit, but it occurs to me this could also be gaslighting in the old-fashioned sense. I have no reason to suspect my husband of doing anything like that, but like affairs, that’s what everyone thinks, isn’t it?

“So I would like to install a camera to reassure myself that it’s really me doing these things. Obviously, I can’t get permission from my husband without defeating the whole purpose, but I don’t want to damage my relationship in the (much more likely) case that all this has nothing to do with him.

“Would I be the a**hole for temporarily invading his privacy to make myself feel better?”

Several commenters on the post sided with the woman and said putting cameras in the house for a short period of time would be okay, but others disagreed and urged her to instead check the carbon monoxide levels in her home.

According to the NHS, carbon monoxide poisoning can cause symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, and confusion, and can be caused by faulty or poorly installed gas appliances.

One commenter wrote: “Before you do something so intrusive, check your carbon monoxide detectors.”

While another said: “Forgetting stuff is a big side effect of monoxide poisoning.”

But one person who agreed with the woman posted: “I gotta be honest, this is super weird. But what’s the strangest part is he seems nonchalant about you experiencing these things. I would assume a loving partner would be concerned, instead of just complaining about it. If my partner was experiencing this, I’d be pushing for him to go to a doctor.

“Make sure you hide the camera effectively.”
