Investigation underway into vehicle found buried in Atherton yard

ATHERTON — A vehicle was found buried in the yard of an Atherton home Thursday morning, touching off an investigation that ultimately involved cadaver dogs and the possible discovery of human remains, police said.

Landscapers unearthed the vehicle while working on a project at a residence in the 300 block of Stockbridge Avenue, the Atherton Police Department said in a statement.

“Due to the unknown nature of why the vehicle was buried, cadaver dogs were called to the scene,” police said. “The cadaver dogs made a slight notification of possible human remains.”

Technicians with the San Mateo County crime lab were summoned to the scene to help excavate the vehicle.

As of late Thursday, the excavation was ongoing and no human remains had been found.

“We should know hopefully by the morning if there is something or if there isn’t something,” said Atherton police Cmdr. Dan Larsen.

The vehicle was possibly buried sometime in the 1990s, police said, adding that the vehicle was buried at a depth of 4 to 5 feet and contained bags of unused concrete.

Police said the vehicle was buried before the current homeowner occupied the property.

The motive and circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation, police said. No additional information was available Thursday night.
