Jake Paul vs. Anderson Silva result: Paul knocks down Silva late, takes controversial unanimous decision

GLENDALE — The unlikely boxing career of Jake Paul continues…but not without some controversy.

In the toughest fight of his career, Paul scored a late knockdown of Anderson Silva and won a controversial unanimous decision to remain undefeated at 6-0.

It wasn’t the decision as much as it was the wide scorecards that drew boos from the 14,430 fans in attendance at the Desert Diamond Arena. Silva often landed the harder combinations and put Paul in uncomfortable positions as he applied pressure. Although he is now 47 years of age, Silva resembled the man who remains the UFC record holder for his middleweight title reign with his showboating, sharp counterpunching and evasiveness.

However, Paul’s massive right hand found its mark at points and bloodied Silva’s nose in the middle rounds. But it was a wild exchange early on in round eight where Paul finally landed his devastating punch flush. Silva was sent down on his backside and made his way to his feet. If Paul hadn’t earned his respect before, he certainly did with the late knockdown.

Silva recovered and went on the hunt as he brushed up Paul with combinations along the ropes. Unfortunately, his fate was already sealed as the judges already had Paul up.

A very pro-Silva crowd showered the arena with boos as the scorecards were announced in Paul’s favor with many darting for the exits in disgust. Regardless of who you thought won the fight, the 25-year-old Paul showed some marked improvement in his technique and never let the moment overwhelm him as his one-time idol became his rival.

The future remains bright for boxing’s most unlikely star as plenty of options are at his table. He could face Silva again or finally secure a bout with Tommy Fury. He could also have a mega fight with KSI. But the one fight that could materialize is a showdown with Nate Diaz, who was in attendance and reportedly get into a backstage rift with Paul’s team.

With Diaz no longer in the UFC and bad blood existing, it could be the next logical step in the illogical boxing career of “The Problem Child.”

Here’s how it all went down in Arizona.

12:04 a.m.: Jake Paul enters next. The fans don’t cheer as loud as 50 Cent’s “I’ll Whip Your Head” plays.

12:00 a.m.: Anderson Silva makes his walk to DMX’s “Ain’t No Sunshine.”

11:43 p.m.: With that early knockout there is a lot of time to kill before the main event. Hold tight.

Ashton Sylve takes out Braulio Rodriguez in 61 seconds

Result: Ashton Sylve def. Braulio Rodriguez via 1st round KO (1:01)

11:22 p.m.: Holy moly. Ashton Sylve just destroyed Braulio Rodriguez in a matter of minutes. Absolutely nuked him. 8-0, 8 KOs. Sylve might be a problem. That woke this crowd up.

11:20 p.m.: Sylve enters as a Minion. Why? Because it’s Halloween weekend, you dweebs!

11:12 p.m.: The co-main event is up next. Undefeated 18-year-old Ashton Sylve makes his Most Valuable Promotions debut against the hard-as-nails Braulio Rodriguez.

Alexandro Santiago beats Antonio Nieves after 7th round corner stoppage

Result: Antonio Santiago def. Antonio Nieves via 7th round TKO (3:00)

10:54 p.m.: A perfectly fine fight just ended and nobody in the crowd noticed as Nieves corner stopped the fight at the end of round seven. Santiago began to pour on the punishment but, unfortunately, the crowd here just didn’t care. And that’s unfortunate because it was a solid fight. Just not for this crowd.

10:40 p.m.: We’re in round five of Santiago vs. Nieves and the fans here really don’t care to see a technically sound fight. Instead, they’ve been focused on the celebrities in attendance that include Logan Paul, Sean O’Malley, Paulo Costa, Dan Bilzerian and other social media influencers. Santiago and Nieves will need to fight with reckless abandon if they want to get this crowd into their fight.

10:24 p.m.: Some boxing with actual pro fighters is up next as Alexandro Santiago and Antonio Nieves have a rematch six years in the making. Their first fight ended in a split draw. Both claim to be better now but we shall see.

Uriah Hall sweeps Le’Veon Bell for unanimous decision

Result: Uriah Hall def. Le’Veon Bell via unanimous decision. Scores were 40-36, 40-36 & 40-36

10:10 p.m.: That was the exact opposite of what Avila-Doctor Mike gave us. Pretty underwhelming as Bell’s unorthodox style made it difficult for Hall to line up a big shot. But the ones that Hall landed were good enough to get the decision. Hall said he wants to continue boxing and got a rise out of the crowd when he said “I want Jake Paul. I want to expose him. If Anderson Silva doesn’t do it, I’m going to f–k you up.”

Alrighty then.

10:00 p.m.: Le’Veon Bell is fighting like Jim Carrey from “Me, Myself & Irene” while Uriah Hall is stalking and looking to land the big shot. Hall is probably winning through two rounds with his big right hand every 45 seconds and Bell is just trying to not get knocked out.

9:46 p.m.: Up next is Le’Veon Bell vs. Uriah Hall up next. Yup. A Former NFL Pro Bowl running back facing an actual mixed martial artist. I mean, why not?

Chris Avila spoils pro boxing debut of “Doctor Mike” with decision win

Result: Chris Avila def. Doctor Mike via unanimous decision. Scores were (40-36, 40-36 & 40-36)

9:31 p.m.: This is a strangely fun fight. Although Avila is likely up and landing the bigger punches, Doctor Mike isn’t folding and fighting back. Avila has landed some tremendous overhands and combination while Mike has taken them and landed some shots of his own. Say what you want but this ain’t bad from a guy who is having his first professional boxing match.

9:24 p.m.: Well, it looks like the Doctor has some skills. Avila spent the first round loading up and trying to send the Doctor to the emergency room while Doctor Mike is using his jab, circling and landing some shots. Can’t say this is what I expected.

9:16 p.m.: We’re live from the Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale for the main card of Jake Paul vs. Anderson Silva and we’re kicking things off with Mike “Doctor Mike” Varshavski taking on Chris Avila. Doctor Mike is a real doctor who is making his boxing debut and donating his entire purse to the Boys & Girls Club while Avila is part of Nate Diaz’s team. This should be one interesting fight.
