Jeep Shows Off Its First Electric SUVs for North America, Europe

Jeep today teased the launch of three fully electric SUVs for the European and North American markets over the next two years.

In North America, drivers will have a chance to go off-roading with the Jeep Recon or hit the road in an all-new Wagoneer premium SUV, currently codenamed Wagoneer S. In Europe, they can rev up the Jeep Avenger compact SUV.

Jeep Recon and Wagoneer S production will start in 2024; customers can place reservations starting in 2023. In Europe, the Jeep Avenger will arrive 2023, though prospective buyers can get a glimpse of it at the Paris Motor Show next month. In total, Jeep plans to introduce four zero-emission cars in North America and in Europe by 2025.

Jeep didn’t reveal the estimated range for the Recon, but the Wagoneer S has a target range of 400 miles on a single charge. The all-electric Jeep Avenger, coming to Europe in 2023, will have about 250 miles of range. This is the latest in a series of EV announcements from Jeep, which wants 50% of its North American sales and 100% of European sales to be all-electric by 2030. EV adoption in Europe, and western Europe countries in particular, is currently double or more than that of the US.

The Jeep Wrangler 4xe plug-in electric hybrid, the brand’s first foray into electric vehicles, is the top-selling PHEV in the US, the company says. In June 2023, the brand announced(Opens in a new window) another PHEV for 2023, the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe.

 “Driven by the success of our electrified 4xe portfolio in North America and Europe, we are designing and developing the most capable and sustainable Jeep SUVs to date, on our path to becoming the leading zero-emission SUV brand in the world,” said Christian Meunier, Jeep brand CEO, in today’s press release(Opens in a new window). 

To support its EV production, Jeep inked a deal earlier this year with Controlled Thermal Resources to source lithium for the batteries from California’s Salton Sea, Reuters reports(Opens in a new window).

The Jeep Recon and Wrangler S will be produced in North America, The Detroit News reports(Opens in a new window). Jeep didn’t specify where, but the Wrangler 4xe is assembled(Opens in a new window) in Toledo, Ohio.
