Jerome Boger mistakes Seahawks for Mariners while calling penalty, internet promptly erupts

For the first time in a long time, the Seattle Mariners are relevant. And nothing encapsulates that statement better than Jerome Boger’s faux pas Sunday.

The veteran NFL referee was officiating the Seahawks’ Week 8 clash vs. the Giants at Lumen Field. Late in the fourth quarter, his crew spotted an infraction on the sideline after Seattle coach Pete Carroll bumped into an official.

Carroll’s frustration with the flag was clear, but he should be relieved that it wasn’t called on him specifically. Because when Boger spoke into his microphone, he called the foul on the coaching staff “of the Seattle Mariners,” who have enjoyed a baseball renaissance the past couple years.

Boger’s mix-up drew plenty of attention, including from the Mariners’ Twitter account.

Embracing the chaos, indeed. You have to wonder if the M’s could call on Geno Smith as a right-handed arm out of the bullpen. Or maybe Julio Rodriguez can snag some passes in the flat.

Regardless, with the M’s surging in the right direction and the Seahawks sitting at the top of the NFC West after eight weeks, Seattle sports fans are riding high. (Ed. note: The NHL Kraken are doing OK, too.) It seems that even Boger got caught up in that.
