Named after Jia’s 2002 feature, Unknown Pleasures is a collaborative effort between Jia and the seasoned distributor Tian Qi, who also founded Hero Films, known for distributing Gu You’s Busan title “The First Taste of Loneliness.” This dynamic duo isn’t new to this game; Tian’s previous company successfully released Weerasethakul’s “Memoria” in China, pulling in a cool $360,000—a third of the film’s total box office. Unknown Pleasures acquired it in 2024, screened it at the Pingyao International Film Festival, and then dropped it in Chinese cinemas on March 8 for International Women’s Day.
