Jimmy Garoppolo, Kyle Shanahan downplay ‘joke’ video of 49ers QB appearing to rip play-calling decisions

The 49ers offense had a night to forget on Sunday that was overshadowed by the brutal Broncos offense.

After an early touchdown drive in which they went 75 yards on six plays, Jimmy Garoppolo and co sputtered for just three points the rest of the game, not to mention three turnovers, including an interception that all but clinched it for the Broncos.

After the play, Garoppolo’s frustration seemingly bubbled over.

The quarterback, who went 18 of 29 for 211 yards, a touchdown, and an interception, appeared to say “all of your plays … suck, man.” A viral video of Garoppolo seemingly voicing that displeasure made the rounds on Twitter after a discerning user spotted it, and it took on a life of its own as people reading Garoppolo’s lips speculated that he was talking about coach Kyle Shanahan.

There is a lot of context missing around this video, something Garoppolo and Shanahan have been quick to point out this week.

“I say a lot of things,” Garoppolo said, per The Athletic.

Shanahan was a bit more verbose in addressing it.

“[It’s] like it is with one of my friends,” Shanahan said, per Yahoo Sports. “Jimmy and I are around each other every single day, so there’s not any awkwardness for us or anything that’s kept from each other.”

He also hand-waved the speculation around what Garoppolo was saying or how he was saying it as “a joke.”

The 49ers are back in primetime in Week 4 to take on the Los Angeles Rams on “Monday Night Football.” You can bet ESPN is going to have some cameras trained on Garoppolo on frustrating plays. In the meantime, we have to assume the hatchet — if there was one — has been buried.
