KVIFF Industry Days are ‘Straight Up’ Legit for Film Creators!

Date:

Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, or KVIFF, is seriously stepping up its game with its expanded Industry Days programs, creating ‘dope’ opportunities for **film creators** from Central and Eastern Europe. This year’s 60th edition, running July 3-11, is pulling out all the stops to cement its role as a crucial hub for the region’s cinematic talent. They’re doubling down on their Central-European co-production focus, making it a pivotal event for anyone looking to get their projects seen or funded. It’s ‘no cap’ a big deal for the industry.

The KVIFF Central Stage showcase, now in its second year, is highkey a game-changer. It highlights 11 upcoming features from established filmmakers, offering them a unique platform for visibility and financing. These aren’t just any flicks; we’re talking about projects from directors with serious festival pedigrees, looking for co-production, sales, and distribution. With exclusive post-production advantages through UPP and Soundsquare, plus eligibility for the €20,000 Eurimages Co-Production Development Award, it’s providing a crucial springboard for mid-career professionals often overlooked in the film landscape. This initiative is ‘on point’ for bridging a significant industry gap.

Not to be outdone, the inaugural Book-to-Screen program is a ‘fire’ addition, aiming to transform literary works into cinematic gold. Designed to foster collaboration between the film and publishing industries, it showcases eight award-winning books with strong cinematic potential, selected from over 70 submissions across 14 countries. This program creates a much-needed market for adaptation rights, making it easier for producers to discover fresh, original IP. From historical epics and folk horror to children’s stories and bold contemporary voices, this initiative is broadening the scope of storytelling available to filmmakers.

Among the Central Stage selections, some projects are already generating buzz. Nicolas Steiner, known for his thought-provoking films, brings ‘Flying Mountain’ from Switzerland. Ukraine is strongly represented with Antonio Lukich’s ‘Screaming Girl’ and Marysia Nikitiuk’s ‘Noah’, both from critically acclaimed directors. A particular standout for history buffs and music fans is the Czech Republic’s ‘The Stones Are Rolling to Prague,’ a comedic film recalling the iconic 1990 Rolling Stones mega-concert. These films highlight the diverse narratives and skilled craftsmanship emerging from the region, proving that Central European cinema is definitely ‘hitting different’ right now.

On the literary front, the Book-to-Screen lineup features captivating narratives like Lithuania’s ‘Aspic Bistro,’ a magical-realism satire set in an Orwellian kitchen, and Georgia’s ‘Cupid at the Kremlin Wall,’ a historical drama from a prolific author. Ukraine’s ‘Amadoka,’ a historical war novel, and Poland’s ‘The River Odyssey of Kora from Willow Meadow,’ an ecologically relevant children’s story, also promise rich adaptations. The inclusion of diverse genres, from a graphic novel like Slovakia’s ‘The Zone’ to Patrik Banga’s autobiographical ‘The True Way Out,’ truly underscores the program’s commitment to showcasing the depth and breadth of regional storytelling.

KVIFF’s expanded Industry Days are more than just a festival side hustle; they’re a vital ecosystem for fostering talent and bringing fresh stories to screens worldwide. By strategically supporting both established and emerging voices, and by bridging the gap between publishing and film, KVIFF is solidifying its reputation as a forward-thinking cultural institution. It’s ‘straight up’ a must-attend for anyone serious about the future of Central and Eastern European cinema. This commitment to artistic development is ‘periodt’ for the industry.
