Kyler Murray gives perfect quote to describe fourth-and-1 interception: ‘Schematically we were kinda f—’

The Cardinals’ woes continued Sunday, as they dropped their fourth game in their last five against the Chargers 25-24 to go to 4-8 on the season.

Perhaps no play better encapsulated the Cardinals’ struggles better than a fourth-and-1 interception in the second quarter, in which Kyler Murray threw a heave up to DeAndre Hopkins that was intercepted by Derwin James.

Murray never looked confident in the play, pumping his shoulders and resetting his feet multiple times before hauling one up.

Multiple Cardinals receivers looked like they were in the area, and a miscommunication seemed to be the most likely explanation.

After the game, a displeased Murray gave the perfect quote to describe the play, which doesn’t sound like it was supposed to go to Hopkins at all.

“No that wasn’t for Hop, actually,” Murray told reporters after the game. “Schematically we were kinda f—.”

It was clear from the outset something about the play wasn’t working right. But Murray’s honest answer seemed to be the best way to put it.

The Cardinals still seem to be trying to work things out this season, but it doesn’t seem like things are getting much better.

Sunday’s loss had the fourth-down pick as a lowlight, but it was far from what lost them the game. They’ll need to get things together schematically quickly to pick up their rapidly-dwindling playoff hopes. But to pick up those pieces, they’ll need to string some wins together.
