Leeds United vs. Arsenal live score, updates, highlights & lineups from Premier League match as Saka puts Gunners ahead after powercut delay

Bukayo Saka gave Arsenal a 35th-minute lead at Leeds after Sunday’s game at Elland Road was delayed by a powercut.

The issue compromised the official’s communication systems and therefore the use of goalline technology and VAR. After a long delay, referee Chris Kavanagh took the players off the field at around 2:15 pm local time.

Play resumed at 2:40 pm and, 10 minutes before halftime, Saka capitalised on an error from Leeds forward Rodrigo and clipped majestic finish beyond Illan Meslier.

Leaders Arsenal are aiming to make it nine wins out of 10 in the Premier League this season.

The Sporting News is following the match live and providing live score updates, and commentary.

Leeds United vs. Arsenal live updates, highlights from the Premier League clash at Elland Road

44th minute: Aaronson picked Tomiyasu’s pocket. Good position for Leeds. Harrison thinks about a shot, then has one. Over.

42nd minute: Leeds harass Arsenal for a long period and Rodrigo eventually gets possession. Roca then lofts the ball from 30 yards into Ramsdale’s arms. The gap in effectiveness between Marsch’s men without the ball and with it is really starting to look like a problem.

40th minute: Rodrigo, looking to atone for his error. He takes a heavy touch, almost runs the ball out of play and then delays his pass to the extent that Kristensen is caught offside. I think he needs halftime.

35th minute: GOOOAAALLLLL!!!! Saka!!!!

That’s a sumptuous finish from Saka but, my word, what on earth was Rodrigo doing. For reasons best known to himself, the Leeds attack clumped an aerial pass backwards across his own half. Saka battled with Struijk for the ball, Odegaard for a return pass and the England winger clipped a delicious finish into the top corner.

32nd minute: Odegaard eventually shoots. Meslier gets down to his left, throws his metaphorical cap on it and gathers the ball.

31st minute: Oh good, a decision that pleases roughly no one. Koch shoves Jesus in the back. The Leeds fans think it’s soft, Kavanagh blows, even though Martinelli had a decent enough advantage his hands. We’ll have a freekick 30 yards from goal.

29th minute: Another promising situation for Leeds, who break from midfield after Aaronson takes a whack. The all-action American gets back on his feet and joins the attack. His cross from the right is an inviting one but there’s no one there.

28th minute: Arsenal taking the sting out of things with some calm possession. They needed this. Saka appears to very  much like the look of Struijk whenever he gets the ball.

25th minute: Sinisterra crosses for, you guessed it, Rodrigo. Gabriel gets his chest in the way to deflect the ball behind. A deep corner is cleared as far as Roca, who’s volley is blocked.

23rd minute: Sinisterra and Rodrigo combine again – they really are Leeds’ main threat – but the Spain international’s tame shot is blocked. At the other end, Odegaard blooters one out for a goal kick.

21st minute: Sweeping Arsenal attack and that’s so wasteful from Gabriel Jesus, who looks to dink over Meslier at the back post. He accomplishes that, in fairness, but also comfortably clears the crossbar.

20th minute: Arsenal do not deal with the resulting corner. Struijk almost prods home but Ramsdale saves well.

20th minute: Nice switch of play from Rodrigo to Sinisterra on the left. His deflected strike hits the side-netting.

19th minute: Martinelli cuts in field. Danger for Leeds. He finds Odegaaard, who sweetly strikes one form outside the area but it’s deflected behind.

16th minute: It briefly looks like Kristensen has misjudged a ball to the back post but he gets a vital glancing header on it. Martinelli definitely thought he’d missed it as he ended up volleying fresh air.

13th minute: Gabriel gets a head on it but it’s very easy for Mesiler to gather…then some goalkeeping mayhem at the other end. Ramsdale clatters a clearance right at Gabriel. Leeds’ high pressing is definitely causing a bit of discomfort but they need more quality on the ball.

12th minute: Saka glides into the Leeds area down the right with effortless grace. The hosts scramble behind for a corner.

10th minute: Martinelli looks to arrow a ball in behind the Leeds defence but Cooper reads it with Jesus in close attendance. Leeds break and Rodrigo chops back inside Tomiyasu before having his shot blocked.

8th minute: Ramsdale very relaxed under pressure from Rodrigo just there. He’ll be aware of Edouard Mendy’s horror show here a month or so ago, no doubt.

6th minute: We’ve settled into the expected pattern here, with Arsenal looking composed in possession and Leeds being compact and organised behind the ball, ready to spring on the counter should the opportunity arise.

2nd minute: Right, back to the football! Sinisterra must have had a good second warm-up. The Colombia forward drives at the Arsenal defence and sends a speculative shot wide from the edge of the box.

14:30 GMT: Good news! The players are back out and going through their warm-ups! We’re aiming for a restart 10 minutes from now.

14:25 GMT: Kavanagh is out on the pitch testing the goalline technology with a ball. The lights briefly went out in the press box in the second minute of the game. My guess is that same glitch shorted the system running goalline technology and VAR. Fingers crossed we’re through those issues.

14:15 GMT: The players are now back inside after an announcement over the public address system that our problem is a powercut. Looks like we could be waiting a while. As you might expect, the internet signal now isn’t in the best shape, but I’ll try my best to keep you updated!

Don’t really know what minute it is at this stage: Nope, we’re still not playing. Both teams’ goalkeeping coaches are out keeping Meslier and Ramsdale warm.

6th minute: There’s no quick fix here. Now both sets of players are over at the dugouts for a drink.

4th minute: It must be said, Kavanagh’s struggles are not being treated with much sympathy at Elland Road. Both teams are keeping warm by playing some keep ball with some extra balls on the field. Marsch called Kristensen over for a chat.

2nd minute: Interestingly, Jack Harrison appears to be lining up at centre-forward for now. There’s also a break in play as referee Chris Kavanagh is having problems with his headset.

2 mins from kickoff: The teams are out. The atmosphere is crackling at Elland Road. We’re ready to go.

20 mins from kickoff: So if Arsenal win today, they will open up a four-point advantage at the top before Manchester City kick off at against Liverpool. City have won once at Anfield in the Premier League since 2003. This could be a day when Arsenal’s title ambitions really begin to crystalise.

30 mins from kickoff: Leeds are out and going through their warm-ups. We’re bathed in sunshine at Elland Road, although it is the first jumper and big coat day of the season for me, if anyone is keeping tabs on autumn press box wardrobes.

55 mins from kickoff: Here’s what the Leeds team looks like. Luis Sinisterra is back, having been sent off in the 0-0 draw against Aston Villa at Elland Road. Patrick Bamford drops to the bench.

1 hour from kickoff: The teams are in. Gabriel Jesus is back at centre-forward for Arsenal after resting up for the Europa League trip to Bodo/Glimt.

1hr 15 mins from kickoff: Gabriel Martinelli gave Arsenal a flying start in their statement 3-2 win over Liverpool last weekend. The Brazilian is on his longest run of consecutive Premier League starts for the Gunners (10) and has chipped in with five goals and three assists during this period. Leeds right-back Rasmus Kristensen can expect to have his hands full today. That’s if they’re both playing, of course – team news will be with us in about 15 minutes.

1hr 40 mins from kickoff: Leeds are unbeaten at home this season but winless in five games, having claimed just two points since August. They lost 2-1 at Crystal Palace seven days ago, a result lamented by Jesse Marsch in his programme notes. “In my opinion, the first half was one of the best since I’ve been at the club, we were on top and we should have scored further goals from the chances we created,” he said. “We take a lot of pride in set-pieces, so we were disappointed to concede from one just before the break and it allowed Crystal Palace to change things at halftime. The group is still learning and we have a lot of work to do to get to where we want to be, but everyone remains committed to the process.”£

1 hr 50 mins from kickoff: When Arsenal came to Elland Road last December, Mikel Arteta’s team had lost their previous three away Premier League games. A 4-1 win helped to quell some doubts around the Gunners’ boss and he returns to West Yorkshire in a very different predicament, with his team sitting pretty at the top of the table after eight wins from nine matches. Incidentally, each of the previous four teams to win nine of their opening 10 have gone on to lift the title.

2 hours from kickoff: Hello and welcome to The Sporting News’ coverage of Premier League leaders Arsenal’s latest assignment against Leeds at a sold-out Elland Road.
