Leeds vs. Everton result, highlights & analysis as points are shared at Elland Road after Gordon opener

Anthony Gordon scored and produced a feisty gem of a performance as Everton played out a 1-1 draw with Leeds at Elland Road.

Frank Lampard’s side remain winless after five Premier League matches and, if a grim slog against relegation is to ensue, they could do without losing Gordon to reported suitors Chelsea before Thursday’s transfer deadline.

The 21-year-old winger coolly dispatched Alex Iwobi’s 17th-minute through ball past Illan Meslier and was generally responsible for Everton’s fleeting moments of attacking quality.

Leeds deserved at least a point and a rip-roaring start to the second half brought them level as Luis Sinisterra marked his Premier League debut with a 20-yard drive into the bottom corner.

The opening exchanges were scrappy but Gordon was at the heart of a well-worked Everton opener, continuing his run after Dwight McNeil collected a second ball and coolly applying the finish to Iwobi’s pass.

Rodrigo almost got on the end of an inviting Jack Harrison cross but his evening soon ended in painful fashion and Leeds concluded the opening half with 70% possession but little to show for their efforts.

Marsch’s men cranked through the gears early in the second period, with Pickford forced into smart stops from Aaronson and Harrison before Sinisterra’s low drive got the better of him to send the home faithful into raptures.

Everton briefly thought they had regained the lead in the 67th minute but Demarai Gray was fractionally offside when he darted onto Gordon’s pass and beat Meslier.

During the closing stages, both goalkeepers impressed to ensure a share of the spoils. Pickford spared the otherwise impressive James Tarkowski when the Everton centre-back got his legs tangled to present Rodrigo’s replacement Joe Gelhardt with a glorious opening.

The England number one thrust out his left heel to save brilliantly, while Meslier stood firm to repel Nathan Patterson after Gordon measured the pass to release the right-back.

Fulltime: The points are shared. Marsch is pointing to his comedy watch again because he things there should have been more stoppage time. He and Lampard share an embrace, which is nice, all things considered. Leeds would certainly have taken eight points from their first five games and look to be a team going places under their American coach. Everton showed bags of character but, on this evidence, they really cannot afford to lose Gordon before the transfer window closes. 

90th minute: We’re into three minutes of injury time. Harrison has just ploughed another corner into the first man. I dare say Marsch will be hammering Leeds through some new set-piece routines before the weekend trip to Brentford.

85th minute: Everton back off Harrison, which seems pretty silly by all accounts. The winger’s trusty left boot lets him down, though, and the only winners are fans of prolonged Jordan Pickford goal-kicks.

84th minute: Ooh, was that the chance for Everton. Gordon again pulls the strings, this time releasing Patterson. No offside this time but Meslier stands firm to repel the right-back’s shot. Have Leeds run out of steam here?

79th minute: Gordon, who has produced a little gem of a performance, delays the pass and finds the overlapping Mykolenko. He wins a corner, from which Leeds can’t clear and Onana should probably score in the scramble. Kristensen makes the block from point-blank range.​​​​​​

75th minute: Leeds have taken some bad corners tonight. That’s the most recent one. Here come the cavalry in the form of Bamford and James. 

74th minute: Brilliant save from Pickford. Gelhardt chance looked to have gone but Tarkowski got himself in a bit of a mess. It looked like a certain goal but the Everton keeper stuck out a boot to save.

73rd minute: Leeds win their eighth corner. THis own is better but Klich and Llorente appear to get in one another’s way and the latter’s header loops behind.

70th minute: Now then, Anthony Gordon. Careful! A pretty petulant shove in the back from the winger sends Gelhardt sprawling. He’s on a yellow, remember. He must have really wanted that corner earlier on because he’s not seemed to calm down since.

68th minute: End to end stuff now, which I’m not sure is what Lampard wants. Everton don’t clear their lines and Gelhardt flashes wide. That was a big chance. He should hit the target there.

66th minute: GOOAA…no! Gordon gets Leeds on the retreat again and slots a pass through to Gray. The winger completes a tidy finish but is flagged offside. Replays show that was just the right call from the assistant.

64th minute: McNeil shanks a hopefully strike way wide. Sinisterra departs to a standing ovation. what a night it’s been for him. Cult hero Mateusz Klich is on. You know, just to calm things down a bit…

59th minute: Oh, more palava now! There’s a skirmish over on the far side after Gordon nudges into Kristensen late and off the ball. The fullback prolongs the argument and both are booked. The detente between both benches is gone as Lampard and Marsch exchange words. Fiesty. The next goal here feels huge.

57th minute: Gordon thinks he should have a corner. The officials don’t and he responds with a bit of a tantrum. The Elland Road faithful lap it up.

55th minute: GOOOAAAALLL!!!!! Sinisterra!!!!

Boy, has it been coming. Gelhardt pops a pass off to Aaronson who has the Everton defence back pedalling again, he slotws a pass to Sinisterra, whose low left-footed shot wrong-foots Pickford.

53rd minute: Aaronson dispossesses Patterson in the final third. Everton see out the danger, but they’re in the eye of a storm here, living on their wits. 

52nd minute: Aaronson scampers down the left channel but he floats a chip into Pickford’s arms. Gelhardt tries to prolong an argument with Tarkowkski. Being about a foot taller, the Everton defender finds that quite funny. Coady tells everyone to calm down, but where’s the fun in that?

51st minute: Sinisterra’s skiddy cross from the right gets all the way through to Harrison. It’s on his weaker right foot and Pickford is able to tumble away to his left and hold on. Leeds are cranking it up, though and this would be a very long time for Everton dwell in survival mode.

49th minute: McNeil is back to thwart Harrison and Leeds win a corner. Aaronson’s delivery isn’t great. Harrison will take this next one. Head tennis ensues and Patterson eventually Sunday Leagues one out for a throw.

47th minute: Leeds’ best attacking moment. Harrison feeds Aaronson, who cuts inside and forces Pickford to push behind. The American gees up the Revie Stand.

46th minute: Back underway. No changes from either manager. How many minutes has Bamford got in his legs, I wonder. 

Halftime: No Everton player has completed more than Tarkowski’s 17 passes. No player in their front six is into double figures on that count and Leeds have had 70% of possession. That makes it pretty clear what sort of game Lampard’s men are trying to play but it’s working. Talking of numbers, how much is Anthony Gordon worth now? See you back here in a little while.

45th minute+4: Leeds haven’t really used these extra minutes particularly well. A corner is worked back to Adams, whose searching cross to the back post is cleared.

45th minute: Everton repel a spell of Leeds pressure down the left-hand side and win a goal-kick. Lampard responds with a Tim Henman-style fist bump. Maybe he just loves watching Pickford having a good old think about things. On that, there’ll be four minutes added time.

44th minute: Poor clearance from Meslier but Gordon and Gray can’t capitalise.

43rd minute: “SHOOOOOTT” shout the home fans. Koch obliges and yahoos one several rows back from 35 yards. 

42nd minute: More arguing over a throw-in, who should get it and who’s stopping it being taken. It’s all a bit odd, quite frankly, but it’s stoking the atmosphere. 

40th minute: Adams is booked for dissent and referee Darren England is now officially less popular than Pickford and Lampard inside Elland Road.

39th minute: A delightful touch from Sinisterra takes him away from Mykolenlo. He feels Aaronson and the Leeds attacker can’t quite get the ball out of his feet to get a decent attempt off on the ends of the area. 

38th minute: There’s another break in play as Gelhardt introduces himself to Tarkowski with an elbow to the chin. It didn’t look intentional, to give the Leeds youngster the benefit of the doubt. Given everyone has seemed to be displeased with most decisions tonight, it’s telling that no one is overly bothered on this occasion. Tarkowski has been very good so far and is able to continue.

34th minute: Pickford hares out for a punch, hardly gets any of the ball and Coady volleys clear. Calm down, everyone!

31st minute: More eye-catching work from Gordon, who Kristensen hasn’t really worked out how to contain down the Everton left. He settles on conceding a free-kick right on the edge of the box. Gray’s drilled delivery is a waste.

29th minute: That’s a wrap for Rodrigo, who looks to have a dislocated shoulder. On comes Gelhardt. Again, Pickford didn’t do anything malicious there, but that should further enhance his reputation with the locals.

28th minute: Jordan Pickford klaxon!!!! The England number one is out of his ground as Sinisterra slides Rodrigo through. Pickford jostles with the forward and impressively clears his lines. It was a fair challenge but Rodrigo looks to have sustained some shoulder damage. Patrick Bamford is warming up.

24th minute: Cross from the right this time and Rodrigo heads over, which give Pickford another opportunity to take an age over a goal-kick. Marsch is pointing to his watch with some elan on the touchline.

22nd minute: Ohh, should be 1-1. Harrison whips in a typically devilish ball from the left and Rodrigo can’t quite get the touch that would bring his fifth goal of the season.

20th minute: Everton try the same cute through ball routine again. Davies is the target this time, Meslier gets there first, the midfielder has a petulant kick out and then tries to stop Leeds’ number one getting rid of the ball. Meslier shoves him and Davies is booked. Honestly, whenever Frank Lampard is at this ground, people lose the run of themselves.

17th minute: GOOOAALLL!!!! Gordon!!!!

Well, well. That’s a little against the run of play, but Everton will take it. McNeil is first to a second ball when Gordon is dispossessed. He finds Iwobi and the winger has stayed on the move with an intelligent run. Gordon finds a finish to match and then goads the home fans for good measure.

14th minute: Teasing ball into the Everton box from Struijk but Pickford reads it and pouches it.

11th minute: Gordon on the deck a little theatrically after a foul by Kristensen. Both managers not too happy. Leeds then win a free-kick that Gordon prevents them from taking quickly. Marsch is still haranguing fourth official Andre Marriner.

9th minute: Aaronson’s delivery doesn’t beat the first man and our wait for the first goalmouth action of the night goes on.

8th minute: A couple of times Leeds have tried to take quick throw-ins on this near right touchline. A couple of times Everton have stopped them from doing so. Marsch not happy but his team have managed to win a corner.

5th minute: Davies went scampering through there to be flagged offside but it looks like it will be his job to support an Everton frontline without a striker. Gray is central at the moment, with Gordon operating in a more natural position off the left.

3rd minute: Sumptuous pass out to the left from Roca and Harrison gets an early look at Patterson but the Everton fullback does his job.

1st minute: We’re underway. It looks like Sinisterra will be operating off the right on his first Premier League start for the hosts.

2 mins from kickoff: The teams are out. Marching On Together and all that, boos for Lampard. Expecting a tasty start here…

7 mins from kickoff: Elland Road is almost full, the teams are in the tunnel and the atmosphere is crackling. Late summer evening matches that kickoff as daylight fades remain one of the great joys of the English season. Call me a soppy old romantic, I don’t care.

20 mins from kickoff: You know that thing Juergen Klopp does when he has a big stare down at the opposition warmup. Well, Lampard is watching Leeds pretty intently, initially striking a side-on pose and watching Jesse Marsch’s squad over his shoulder.

25 mins from kickoff: Times might be tough now, but Elland Road has been a happy hunting ground for Lampard previously. His Derby County famously beat Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds in the 2018/19 Championship playoff semifinals, after ‘spygate’ and all that. That probably explains why he’s just received some pantomime boos from the home fans.

35 mins from kickoff: The teams are out and going through their warm-ups. New Everton signing Neal Maupay is not among them due to “Premier League requirements”. Whether that’s a paperwork snafu or something else, it doesn’t help Lampard. Salomon Rondon is on the bench, which probably means Gordon at the centre of the attack, flanked by Gray and McNeil.

55 mins from kickoff: Gordon starts! That and the fact Todd Boehly seems continually keen to spray plenty of millions elsewhere seems like good news for Everton. It looks like Lampard has switched to a 4-3-3.

1hour from kickoff: The teams are out! Patrick Bamford is fit and among the Leeds substitutes.

1hr 15 mins from kickoff: Thursday is, of course, transfer deadline day. Everton can expect their usual drama surrounding potential ins and outs but, after a difficult 2021/22 on the field, Leeds will reflect on a window of business well done. “Already, we know we have secured 90 per cent of our number one targets, which is an impressive strike rate,” says chief executive Angus Kinnear in his programme notes for tonight’s match. “We have also succeeded in our primary aim of getting the business done early to allow Jesse to integrate the players into the squad in pre-season, which we believed was particularly critical this year as the whole squad had to embrace a new tactical philosophy.”
