Leylah Fernandez Ousted in China Open Second Round Match

Date:

Leylah Fernandez, a prominent Canadian tennis player, was eliminated from the China Open women’s singles tournament on Saturday. The 24-year-old, seeded 23rd, suffered a three-set defeat in the second round to Uzbekistan’s Kamilla Rakhimova in Beijing. This unexpected loss halts Fernandez’s recent five-match winning streak, which included a title at the Singapore Open.

Fernandez, ranked 26th globally, faced the 76th-ranked Rakhimova in a match that spanned two hours and 32 minutes. The final score saw Rakhimova triumph 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. The match statistics highlighted Rakhimova’s efficiency, as she converted five of 11 break-point opportunities compared to Fernandez’s two of four. Furthermore, Rakhimova recorded a significantly higher percentage of second-serve points at 63 per cent, against the Canadian’s 33 per cent. Fernandez, a native of Laval, Quebec, managed four aces during the contest.

Coming into the China Open, Fernandez had been experiencing strong form, having just secured her sixth career WTA tour victory at the Singapore Open in late September. During that tournament, she notably overcame top-five seeds Mirra Andreeva and Maja Chwalinska. However, the momentum did not carry over into her Beijing campaign against the unseeded Rakhimova, who achieved her fourth career victory against a top-30 ranked opponent. This marks Rakhimova’s second such win in five weeks, following her upset of Barbora Krejcikova in the opening round of the U.S. Open.

Key Upsets and Advancements in Beijing

Beyond Fernandez’s exit, the China Open witnessed other significant results on Saturday. American star Coco Gauff, a two-time singles major champion with titles at the 2023 US Open and 2025 French Open, advanced to the next round. Gauff, who defeated Aryna Sabalenka in both major finals, secured a win over Camila Osorio with scores of 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-2. This was Gauff’s first match since her US Open semifinal loss to Elena Rybakina, marking her return to competitive play after a three-week break.

A major upset occurred in the women’s draw when world No. 1 Elena Rybakina was defeated by Alina Charaeva of Armenia, ranked 118th. Charaeva claimed victory in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, visibly expressing disbelief at her achievement. On the men’s side, in the ATP 500 tournament, top-seeded Alexander Zverev, the reigning US Open champion, progressed easily. He overcame wild-card entry Shang Juncheng 6-0, 6-3, setting up a highly anticipated quarterfinal match against Novak Djokovic. Additionally, Alex de Minaur secured a hard-fought win against Quentin Halys with a scoreline of 3-6, 7-6 (5), 7-5.

The Broader Impact of International Tennis Tournaments

The China Open, as one of the premier tournaments on the international tennis calendar, plays a crucial role beyond individual match results. Featuring top-ranked players from diverse nations like Canada, Uzbekistan, the United States, and Germany, these events significantly influence global ATP and WTA rankings. Such tournaments are vital stepping stones for players aiming to qualify for end-of-season championships and secure better seeding in future Grand Slams. For an international readership, the performance of global talents in events like the China Open offers insights into the evolving landscape of professional tennis and potential shifts in global dominance within the sport.

Kamilla Rakhimova’s progression after defeating a seeded player like Fernandez highlights the competitive depth across the women’s tour, demonstrating that unseeded players can challenge and overcome higher-ranked opponents. Her upcoming match against the 10th-seeded American Iva Jovic in the Round of 32 will be another test of her form and potential to advance further in the tournament. Similarly, Alina Charaeva’s stunning victory over the world No. 1 Rybakina underscores the unpredictable nature of professional tennis and the emergence of new contenders.

As the China Open continues, attention will be focused on whether more upsets will occur and how top seeds in both the men’s and women’s draws will navigate the increasingly challenging competition. The performances in Beijing will undoubtedly shape player narratives and rankings as the professional tennis season progresses towards its conclusion.
