Lingerie expert claims we’re putting bras on wrong

There are a number of different ways you can put a bra on, and many of them depend on factors such as the type of bra you have, your body shape, and most importantly, what feels the most comfortable for you.

But one lingerie expert has claimed that many methods for putting on a bra could actually be shortening the lifespan of your favourite underwear, as she insisted there’s only one “correct” way that will ensure you preserve the life of your bras.

Kelly, who works at Janice Rose Lingerie, appeared in a viral video for the company in which she showed the different ways you can put on a bra, but said that most of them were incorrect.

The video, posted on @janiceroselingerie, showed Kelly trying on a plain white bra with clasps at the back, and the first two methods she tried involved fastening the clasps before you put the bra on.

Some people will then pull the bra over their head to put it on in the same way you would a t-shirt, or step into it and pull it up, like you would a skirt or some dresses.

But after each method, Kelly said: “No, no, no!”, to indicate that neither of those was the correct way of doing things.

She then moved on to the popular twisting method, where you start by fastening the clasps around your chest at the front of your body so you can see what you’re doing, before twisting the bra so that the clasps are at the back and slipping your arms into the straps.

Kelly also claimed this way was wrong too, as she moved on to the final method which involved slipping your arms into the straps while the bra is undone, before doing it up behind your back, as the expert said this was the best way to prevent unnecessary wear and tear.

The clip was captioned: “How do you put your bra on? Preserve the life of your bra by putting it on correctly.”

But commenters on the video struggled to accept the expert’s advice, as many said that while the final method might make bras last longer, it’s inconvenient for some people who may have a limited range of movement and can’t get their arms behind their back to fasten the clasps.

One person wrote: “No, that’s the hardest way to put it on.”

While another said: “I am physically incapable of doing it the last way, so it’s a ‘no no no’ from me!”

And a third posted: “I don’t have eyes on the back of my head.”

The most popular method among commenters was the twisting method, as several people said it had “never failed” them and they had done it that way for years.

Someone said: “The twist has never failed me.”

As someone else added: “The only way I can do it is by twisting it around.”

Speaking about the video, Janice Holmes, Founder of Janice Rose Lingerie, said: “Our TikTok video shows a back fastening bra, which should be fastened at the back to stop the stretching of the underband. This is in line with the manufacturer’s instructions and is designed to help prolong the life of the bra.

“There are other styles of bras without back fasteners which have to be pulled over the head. These fabrics are designed to be pulled and stretched, but the breast support will not be as great.”
