Does your bra hurt or do you have indentations on your shoulder and chest after a long day? This is probably your lingerie letting you know that it’s not fitting you correctly.

Knowing that many women can ignore the signs that their underwear is telling them, a bra fitting expert at luxury lingerie brand Pour Moi has shared her expertise on the warning signs that your bra isn’t fitting you properly – and where the problem initially starts.

Speaking to the Mirror, lingerie technologist Lois Siciliano shared the most crucial little-known sign that it’s time to ditch your ill-fitting bras.

Lois explained: “A bad-fitting bra can have obvious visual effects, such as indentations on shoulders or marks on the chest where the cup size is too small. It can also cause discomfort and pain to the person wearing it.

“The most common side-effect of a badly-fitting bra is rubbing or chafing, with nearly 37% of our survey respondents agreeing that they have experienced this.

“Marks and indentations on shoulders are the second and third-most prominent side effects felt by those surveyed.”

Lois described how having underwear discomfort potentially suggests that it’s too late to prevent the issue.

She explained: “Whilst there are multiple benefits of getting regular fittings, some of us are guilty of leaving it until we have discomfort or find our bras are lacking in support, which can be a little too late to prevent issues.

“If you’re one of the many bra-wearers around the world who can’t wait to take their bra off at the end of the day, then it might be time to get yourself booked in to get measured by an expert.

“If you lift your arms above your head and notice your bra rides up as you do so, or if you remove your bra and notice red marks where it has been digging into your skin, these are all signs that you need to get measured.”

The expert adds that the issue of underwear not fitting accurately starts at the initial purchase of the bras – and warns shoppers to be sure of their size before buying.

Lois has whittled these issues down to three main mistakes that women make when purchasing the lingerie.

She said: “One is the wrong band size – it’s important to buy a bra with the correct band size. A lot of women make this mistake and purchase sizes that are too big for them.

“If the band size of the bra is much bigger then it will not support your breast properly or give the lift required,” she added.

She continued: “Next up is the wrong cup size – most women purchase bras with the wrong cup sizes. You need to buy a bra with a cup size that fits in all breast tissue, avoiding any overspill or gaping on the sides.”

“The third is overall fitting issues – It’s important to check your bra fitting every six months.

“Our body constantly changes and for this reason you need to ensure you are wearing a correctly fitted bra. Especially for those who may be buying bras after pregnancy or weight changes.”
