Liverpool vs. Derby County live score, updates and highlights from EFL Cup clash

ANFIELD, LIVERPOOL — Unbeaten in six EFL Cup games by virtue of winning the competition in 2021/22, Liverpool begin their first trophy defence of the season when League One side Derby County visit Anfield on Wednesday.

The Rams suffered something of an embarrassment on Sunday, spurning a two-goal lead at Torquay United as the non-league side forced an FA Cup replay in a 2-2 draw that included a 95th-minute equaliser.

Liverpool were simultaneously faring better on their travels in an accomplished 2-1 win at Tottenham Hotspur to earn their first league victory on the road of the season.

However, the hosts are likely to name a much-changed team that could give Derby hope of pulling off an upset.

Liverpool vs. Derby County live updates, highlights

HALFTIME: The whistle sounds and we are goalless at the break at Anfield.

40th min: Derby get in behind down Liverpool’s right-hand side but, with his teammates queuing up in the middle, Sibley gets the cross all wrong.

31st min: Huge chance!

Derby give the ball away close to their own box and a quick exchange between Stewart and Carvalho has the latter in for what looks like a tap-in.

Unfortunately for the youngster, he leans back in taking on the shot and skies it into the Anfield Road end.

19th min: Cashin meets a cross into the Kop-end box but can only get under it and heads way over the bar.

Derby’s best effort thus far.

15th min: Oxlade-Chamberlain volleys a clearance back at goal but his effort curls away and a foot wide of the post.

As close as either side have come so far.

10th min: Liverpool’s youngsters controlling possession in the early stages but their lack of physicality is tending to show in the final third, where Derby are looking comfortable in their defending.

KICKOFF: Liverpool get us under way.

5 mins to KO: The Derby fans in good voice as the teams take to the pitch. It’s been a while since they have had the chance to come to Anfield.

35 mins to KO: So, a youthful-looking Liverpool XI tonight with no fewer than five full debuts being made.

There are, however, a few break-glass options on the bench, including Darwin Nunez, Roberto Firmino and Harvey Elliott, as well as a few experienced heads in the starting line-up.

1 hour to KO: Here are the teams…

Liverpool: Kelleher, Ramsay, Gomez, Phillips, Tsimikas, Bajcetic, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Frauendorf, Clark, Stewart, Carvalho.

Derby County: Wildsmith, Forsyth, Hourihane, Cashin, Bird, Collins, Mendez-Laing, Smith, Roberts, Sibley, Osula.

1 hour 15 mins to KO: Some early team news reaching us, which is that Liverpool youngster Layton Stewart is in the starting line-up.

A prolific goalscorer at youth level, the young Scouser earns a first-team debut as his reward.

2 hours to KO: Hello and welcome to The Sporting News’ live coverage of Liverpool vs. Derby County in the EFL Cup.

The Reds start the defence of the trophy they won for a record eighth time last season here at Anfield, but a young, much-changed side is expected to feature here this evening.

Liverpool vs. Derby County betting odds, prediction

Liverpool’s nine trophy wins in this competition are the most of any side in history and the Reds won 7-2 when they last met a third-tier team in the EFL Cup, thrashing Lincoln City during the 2020/21 season.

Derby have had a mixed run of results since Warne became their manager on September 22, including two wins and two defeats in their past six matches. Two points off the League One playoffs, the travelling fans of the famous name in English football would love to see their side take the tie straight to penalties by earning a draw in 90 minutes.

Prediction: After helping Liverpool win both major domestic cups last season, the hefty favourites’ youngsters and second string are likely to be highly motivated to impress again at Anfield. Derby face no pressure against opponents who have struggled in the top flight so far this season but it is hard to look beyond a result along the lines of a 3-1 home win.
