Unbeaten in six EFL Cup games by virtue of winning the competition in 2021/22, Liverpool begin their first trophy defence of the season when League One side Derby County visit Anfield on Wednesday.
The Rams suffered something of an embarrassment on Sunday, spurning a two-goal lead at Torquay United as the non-league side forced an FA Cup replay in a 2-2 draw that included a 95th-minute equaliser.
Liverpool were simultaneously faring better on their travels in an accomplished 2-1 win at Tottenham Hotspur to earn their first league victory on the road of the season.
Whether you’re keen for an upset or hoping the hosts will begin another long cup run, we’ve got the details on how to tune in, the possible lineups and more.

Liverpool vs Derby County lineups
Liverpool assistant manager Pepijn Lijnders has called the match “a moment to shine” for some of the squad’s fringe players and confirmed that goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher, who scored their final penalty when they beat Chelsea in a shootout at Wembley to lift the trophy last season, will start as part of a rotated team.
While Kelleher will make his first senior appearance of the campaign, attackers Diogo Jota (calf) and Luis Diaz (knee) and midfielder Arthur (thigh) are long-term absentees, although Diaz has started running on the training ground.
Defender Joel Matip remains out with a calf injury, while Naby Keita is not yet ready to return. James Milner will again not play following a head injury he sustained during the 2-0 win over Napoli at Anfield in the Champions League on November 1 but will “definitely” be available for the visit of Southampton in the Premier League on Saturday, Lijnders said.
Liverpool predicted lineup (4-3-3): Kelleher — Ramsay, Gomez, Phillips, Tsimikas — Bajcetic, Jones, Doak — Oxlade-Chamberlain, Clark, Carvalho
Attacker David McGoldrick is in contention to return for Derby after missing the tie at Torquay through illness.
Defenders Curtis Davies and James Chester and forward Tom Barkhuizen are out but manager Paul Warne hopes Republic of Ireland midfield prospect Jason Knight could be available for inclusion.
Derby predicted lineup (4-2-3-1): Wildsmith (GK) — Smith, Stearman, Forsyth, Roberts — Hourihane, Bird — Mendez-Laing, McGoldrick, Dobbin — Collins
Liverpool vs Derby County betting odds, prediction
Liverpool’s nine trophy wins in this competition are the most of any side in history and the Reds won 7-2 when they last met a third-tier team in the EFL Cup, thrashing Lincoln City during the 2020/21 season.
Derby have had a mixed run of results since Warne became their manager on September 22, including two wins and two defeats in their past six matches. Two points off the League One playoffs, the travelling fans of the famous name in English football would love to see their side take the tie straight to penalties by earning a draw in 90 minutes.
Prediction: After helping Liverpool win both major domestic cups last season, the hefty favourites’ youngsters and second string are likely to be highly motivated to impress again at Anfield. Derby face no pressure against opponents who have struggled in the top flight so far this season but it is hard to look beyond a result along the lines of a 3-1 home win.
