ANFIELD, LIVERPOOL — Fabio Carvalho fired a 98th-minute winner as Liverpool beat Newcastle 2-1 in an engrossing contest at Anfield.
The visitors had earlier taken a deserved lead as debutant Alexander Isak finished powerfully in an evenly contested first half on Merseyside.
And Eddie Howe’s men still looked good value for at least a point even after Roberto Firmino sidefooted home just past the hour mark, with that blow being followed by some impressive defending.
However, Newcastle had at times leaned on the dark art of time-wasting to halt the Reds’ momentum, and that came back to haunt them at the death.
Having initially signalled five minutes of added time, referee Andre Marriner allowed eight to be played, and it was the last of those that saw Carvalho smash the ball in off the bar after a scramble from a corner.
It was a result that prompted scenes of sheer elation at Anfield and hopes that a mixed start to the season can be consigned to the past.
As for Newcastle, they were left to grapple with the bitter taste of defeat for the first time this term, although they will take heart from another impressive showing.

Liverpool vs. Newcastle as it happened
FULLTIME: All over at Anfield and that feels like a massive win for Liverpool, who weren’t at their best but found a way.
98th min: GOAL! Liverpool have won it!!! It’s pinball in the Newcastle box from a corner delivery, with Gomez and Salah trying to poke it goalward, but it eventually falls to Fabio Carvalho, who somehow smashes a finish in off the bar to clinch the three points. Unbelievable.
90th min: Five minutes to be added on.
86th min: Two attempts in quick succession for Liverpool as Tsimikas fails to head on target at the back post and Fabinho smashes one agonisingly over from distance.
Newcastle holding out well.
79th min: Liverpool piling the pressure on after those changes and Diaz is the latest to go close with a swerving piledriver from distance that Pope can only push over.
70th min: Three changes for Liverpool now, with Milner, Tsimikas and Carvalho entering the fray in place of Henderson, Robertson and Alexander-Arnold.
64th min: Newcastle making changes now to try and halt Liverpool’s momentum, with Isak and Fraser making way for Murphy and Wood.
61st min: GOAL! Liverpool level it up as Salah races in behind onto an Elliott pass and waits for Firmino to arrive for a sidefoot finish into the bottom corner.
Game on!
54th min: Isak has the ball in the back of the net after jinking past Robertson and Gomez and smashing it home but the offside flag goes up quickly and he is denied a second.
53rd min: Liverpool work it will up the pitch with Harvey Elliott at the heart of the move but as Robertson goes to unleash a right-footed effort, Willock is on hand to slide in and block.
More committed defending from the visitors, who have been impressive in that regard.
46th min: Newcastle get the game restarted.
HALFTIME: Newcastle lead at the break at Anfield thanks to a debut goal from Alexander Isak. It’s been a fairly even game but it’s the visitors who made their best chance count and, as such, are on track to extend a poor start to the season for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
45th min: Four minutes of added time signalled as Alexander-Arnold floats a harmless corner into Pope’s hands. Klopp furious.
38th min: GOAL! Newcastle lead and it’s the new man who gets it! That’s some finish, too, blasted high into the net after a slide-rule pass in behind.
Eddie Howe’s men look full of confidence and the fans in the away end are absolutely flying too.
34th min: Firmino picks out a beauty of a pass in behind for Diaz, who rounds Pope but smashes the finish over the bar with the ball running away from him.
What a chance!
29th min: Fabinho gives away a free-kick at the edge of the box for going shoulder-first for a head-high ball.
Trippier stands over it… but his effort is straight down the middle of the goal and into the grateful arms of Alisson.
18th min: Targett pings a pass in off the left and Fraser produces a brilliant turn and first-time shot that whistles just over.
Newcastle looking very bright early doors.
11th min: Newcastle showcase their threat on the break as Willock bursts forward and feeds Isak, but the new man’s shot after cutting in off the left is high and wide, much to the delight of the home fans.
4th min: An early chance for Mohamed Salah to get onto a cross from the left but he misses out and there’s now a break in play for Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope to receive treatment.
1st min: Liverpool get us under way and they’ve been made to attack the Kop first half.
10 mins from kickoff: The travelling Newcastle fans in fine voice as we close in on kickoff here. They’ve certainly had a lot to shout about so far this season.

Hard to imagine things will be quite as straightforward tonight given the visitors’ impressive start.
50 mins from kickoff: So, a Newcastle and Premier League debut for the visitors’ new signing Alexander Isak to look forward to this evening.
And, while Liverpool are unchanged, there’s also the good news of light appearing at the end of the tunnel in terms of their injury crisis. Joel Matip and Curtis Jones coming back in already makes the bench look stronger.

70 mins from kickoff: Team news is imminent here at Anfield but one thing we already know is that both managers are likely to utilise their full squads this evening.
With five subs available and another fixture awaiting both at the weekend, you can expect a slew of changes in the later stages of this one.
90 mins from kickoff: Alexander Isak alights the Newcastle team bus in the bowels of Anfield – could he be set for a debut tonight?
100 mins from kickoff: Some early team news reaching us and it appears that Allan Saint-Maximin is set to miss out in a major blow to the visitors.
The Frenchman suffered a hamstring injury last time out against Wolves and hasn’t recovered in time to face Liverpool.
120 mins from kickoff: Greetings from Anfield where Liverpool are hoping to show that Saturday’s 9-0 win over Bournemouth was exactly the sort of result they needed to kickstart a season that got off to a questionable start.
However, they won’t have things all their own way against a Newcastle side that is brimming with confidence after an undefeated start to the new campaign.
