Mac Jones injury update: Patriots QB reportedly suffers high ankle sprain in loss to Ravens

The Patriots not only lost Sunday’s game against the Ravens, they also might have lost their quarterback.

Late in the fourth quarter of New England’s 37-26 defeat to Baltimore, Mac Jones was hit while throwing an interception. His left leg appeared to twist as he went to the turf.

Jones hobbled off the field in obvious pain. He was being supported while he made his way to the locker room.

The Patriots did not go on offense again after the injury.

Jones threw three interceptions in the game while completing 22 of 32 passes for 321 yards with no touchdowns. He also rushed five times for 31 yards and a score.

The second-year pro came into the contest completing 64.6 percent of his passes for 465 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Here’s the latest on Jones’ injury:

Mac Jones injury update

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the injury was a high-ankle sprain, and that he will undergo further tests to see the severity on Monday. He reported the Patriots could be without Jones next Sunday against the Packers, which would mean Brian Hoyer would start.

Jones hopped off the field after the field. He was putting no weight on his left leg.

Boston Sports Journal’s Greg A. Bedard tweeted that Jones was “screaming in pain” as he was carried down the stairs to the locker room.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, X-rays on Jones’ ankle were negative, but the team would continue to evaluate it.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick said during his post-game press conference that he he did not have an update on Jones’ status. Jones was not available to media as he was receiving treatment after the game, Jeff Howe of The Athletic reported.

How long is Mac Jones out?

The Patriots won’t know how much time Jones will miss until he undergoes further tests, but he would be unlikely to play against the Packers if it is indeed a high-ankle sprain.

Rapoport reported Jones could need to miss extended and head to the injured reserve. That would mean he would be out at least four weeks.

If Jones were to miss time, Hoyer would likely become the team’s starter. Rookie Bailey Zappe, is the only other quarterback on the active roster.

Hoyer has spent seven seasons as the backup in New England at different points of his career. He has started 39 games as a pro and appeared in 75. Hoyer has completed 59.3 percent of his passes for 10,631 yards, 53 touchdowns and 35 interceptions.
