Man slammed after forcing pregnant wife to clean cat litter tray despite health risks

The bloke had agreed that the couple could get a cat despite not liking them, but insisted that it was the woman’s responsibility – and it’s backing down despite her being pregnant

A man has faced backlash from his wife’s family after he forced her to clean out their cat’s litter tray, despite her being pregnant.

Getting a cat was her idea, and while the man wasn’t keen on the concept as he’s not the biggest fan, he agreed as long as it remained her responsibility.

Taking to Reddit, the man explained that even though his wife was pregnant he still expected her to do all the chores for the cat as that was their agreement, but his sister in law was not happy to see her cleaning the litter tray.

In the post, the man, who remained anonymous, explained: “Three years ago my wife decided she desperately wanted a cat. I hate cats and all animals in the house really so I was against it.

“She wouldn’t stop talking about it so finally we made a deal that she could get a cat but it was her responsibility, I would have nothing to do with it and she agreed.”

He went onto explain that the pair had both been sticking to their word with him mostly ignoring the cat and her doing the work, but now she is pregnant she was expecting things to change.

“Now she is pregnant and asked me if I can scoop the litter until she give birth because of toxoplasmosis,” he said.

“I looked it up and as long as she wears gloves and washes her hands she should be good. So I told her absolutely not.”

Toxoplasmosis is an infection which can affect pregnant woman and it can be caught from the faeces of a cat, or infected meat.

While it can be harmless to some, others may have more serious side effects.

The NHS says that most people with Toxoplasmosis might feel flu-like symptoms which could go away within six weeks.

But if you are a pregnant woman you should contact your GP if you have been around either of these things as it can be more dangerous.

On hearing his demand, the wife was not happy so the man reminded her of the agreement they had made and despite her being pregnant, nothing was convincing him to budge.

“I told her it was her responsibility and if she didn’t want to take care of it anymore with the new baby coming we can get rid of it and find it a new home.

“She said no and has been scooping the litter. Her sister was over and saw her doing this and flipped out at me telling how dangerous it is. But of course her sister is going to be on her side and overreact.”

In response, many have been quick to judge the husband and say he should be giving the wife some more help.

One person wrote: “She really shouldn’t be around cat feces [sic] while pregnant. Even at the vet clinic where it’s literally your job to clean this stuff, we do not allow our pregnant employees to clean the cat boxes.”

While another said: “Imagine hating cats more then you love your wife/child. Also, she has to carry that child 24/7, he only needs to give up 5 minutes a day, but that is way too much for him.”
