Many of us are prone to making rash decisions during stressful events, particularly when you’re acting at speed. When a loved one becomes sick, those choices become even more high pressure as you’re tasked with looking after them and ensuring they get the care they need to return to good health.
One man buckled under that pressure in the most unusual way, as he packed some seriously strange contents in his sick girlfriend’s hospital bag as she was rushed to A&E. His partner took to TikTok to reveal the bizarre contents of the bag, which included pork pies, talcum powder and Quavers rather than the essentials you’d expect.

Emily Shires posted a video explaining the baffling blunder, where she showed a clip of the carrier bag which housed the unlikely goods her boyfriend, named in the video as Ben, chose.
Posting under the TikTok handle @ emilyshires1, the young woman begins the video by explaining: “So I was in A&E the other night, we had to call the ambulance out and stuff.
“But basically, I had a blockage in my bowel. However, that’s not what I’m here to tell you”.
After revealing her diagnosis, she continued: “So Ben called the ambulance and I was like right we’re probably going to have to go in, so pack a bag, you know, just essential stuff and we’ll take it with us in the ambulance”.
In the viral clip, Emily explains that the paramedics arrived at her home to take her to hospital, where she soon realised just how poor the boyfriend’s packing skills were.
She said: “Tell me why this is what I saw of the bag that he packed?” before sharing a photo of the supermarket carrier bag in question.
The snapshot reveals a plastic bag brimming with random snacks, including two packets of Quavers crisps, a tub of talcum powder, a pork pie and a protein yoghurt.
The woman continued: “I said to him, pack some essentials cause [sic] we don’t know how long we’re going to be there for.
“Tell me why there’s a f***ing pork pie, a protein yoghurt, Quavers and talc”.
Admitting that one of the strange items may come in handy, the woman said in a rather animated fashion: “Granted, yeah thanks for the talk cause [sic] I may get a sweaty neck but what the f**k”.
In a hilarious conclusion to the video, Emily reveals a picture of her boyfriend “digging into the bag” where he’s seen foraging for treats in an A&E ward.
The video, which has racked up more than 20,000 likes so far, has left hundreds of people in stitches over the bag packing fail.
Many commenters have also shared similar stories of their loved ones packing completely useless items in a hurry to the hospital.
One person said: “When I broke my ankle during lockdown, my other half packed a bag with the framed photo of my dead nan in ‘to comfort me'”, to which Emily replied: “STOP” with five laughing emojis.
Another commenter shared: “My teenage son packed me a bag and put my post in just incase [sic] I wanted to catch up on my bills whilst I was nearly dying”.
Commending the humorous post, one person said “the pork pie killed me” while another added “this is brilliant, strangest thing I’ve ever seen a patient bring in was a plunger”.
Taking to the comments section to share their own unusual hospital hauls, one person said: “My ex packed himself a bag of food, and nothing for me, who was staying in hospital”.
One person shared a useful tip for anyone concerned over their partner’s inability to pack: “Just to let you know paramedics are happy to pack you a bag also full of all sorts if you’re ever worried”.
