A man has taken to Reddit to share how a dog owner was willing to ‘trade’ his weeks-old puppy in exchange for a £400 bike – he told him to take the dog to a rescue centre instead

When it comes to selling old and unwanted items, many people turn to online marketplaces rather than carting their goods down to a car boot sale. But one seller got more than he bargained for after listing his bike for £400 on Facebook Marketplace.

Expecting a ‘quick and easy transaction’, the seller was left gobsmacked after a man tried to ‘trade’ his puppy for his Marino DH Bike. Sharing his shock on Reddit, he said: “Person offered me their dog for my bike… what should I do?”

He shared a screenshot of their bizarre exchange, which includes a picture of the weeks-old puppy. In it, the man interested in buying the bike wrote: “Would you be interested in trading for a puppy. She’s a pit bull mixed with a bully.”

In response, the seller said: “Sheesh man. Nah, bring that thing to an adoption clinic if you’re trading her for a bike… that’s wild.”

While most users couldn’t believe an owner would try to swap their dog for “a new toy”, others shared their experiences with others trying to trade their pets in for something “new and exciting” after growing tired of them.

One user said: “People like this disgust me. If you can’t commit to having it be a part of your life for 10 to 15 years, don’t bother.

“Also, if you’re not going to train it, again, don’t bother, It’s not the animals fault if it destroys things and you didn’t teach it not to.”

Another user added: “I saw someone on Facebook a couple days ago looking to trade their dog for a couple pounds of weed. God awful!”

A third user said: “Outrageous! He’s a living being, not a very small puppy, possibly already attached to the family, poor thing, being treated as a thing.”

However, others questioned why the seller didn’t accept the offer purely to save the dog from an owner who “clearly doesn’t care about his puppy”.

In response, the seller said: “I would but I honestly really need the money and already have a pup that doesn’t get along the best with other dogs. I offered to take the dog but he said no.”
