Man wanted in Bay Area tow truck theft arrested when he returns to retrieve a bicycle he left at the scene

A suspect in a Novato tow truck theft was arrested after returning for a bicycle left at the scene, police said.

The tow truck was taken from a Galli Drive business sometime overnight Friday. Police went to investigate at 6:30 a.m. Saturday, said police Lt. Sophia Winter. Less than two hours later, someone at the business called police again to say someone had come back for a bicycle, apparently left by whomever took the truck.

Two employees from the business followed the bicyclist to Pamaron Way, and, when police showed up, “were involved in a physical struggle” with him, Winter said.

The suspect, 43-year-old Steven Lawrence Hirai of Novato, tried to leave, but police were able to keep him on the scene, and learned he was the subject of an active warrant, also in Marin County, on suspicion of auto theft, Winter said. He was also on probation, she said.

When police searched Hirai they found a stun gun, drug paraphernalia and “controlled substances,” Winter said.

Hirai was booked into the Marin County Jail on suspicion of receiving stolen property, taking a vehicle without owner’s consent, battery and other drug, traffic and weapons offenses. He was held in lieu of $75,000 bail.
