Manchester United vs. Omonia result: McTominay spares hosts blushes with added time Europa League winner

Manchester United’s history of late European winning goals continued as Scott McTominay sealed a 1-0 Europa League victory over Omonia Nicosia in the 93rd minute at Old Trafford.

Omonia keeper Francis Uzoho produced an unbelievable display, with 12 stops, to keep out Marcus Rashford, Casemiro and Cristiano Ronaldo either side of the break.

However, despite the heroics of Uzoho, Omonia were denied a point in Manchester, as substitute McTominay clinched a win for United.

The Scotland international kept his cool inside the box to power home Jadon Sancho’s pass and break Cypriot hearts on a dramatic night in Manchester.

Goals: McTominay – 90+3rd Min – MAN UTD

United saved from another European blank at Old Trafford

Despite the warning of a stuttering performance away in Cyprus last week, United were simply unable to find a way through until added time on the night – despite carving out 12 shots on target – before McTominay’s late salvo.

Uzoho’s inspired performance kept United at bay, but based on the amount of chances created – and missed – United should have found a breakthrough, without the need for a nerve shredding end.

The late twist means United are still in with a chance of catching Real Sociedad in the race for top spot in Group E but the La Liga side remain favourites to avoid a last 16 play off.

Erik ten Hag’s subs make the difference

Erik ten Hag has opted to regularly rotate between a Premier League XI and a Europa League XI in recent weeks and he rested some key names against Neil Lennon’s visitors.

Rashford and Ronaldo threw everything they had at Uzoho and Omonia but a goal eluded them against very limited opposition.

Substitutes Sancho and McTominay eventually turned the tide, but the goal came as a product of the duo’s grit inside the Omonia box, rather than a tactical switch from ten Hag on the night.

40 Mins to KO: What the managers have said before KO

Ten Hag – “We’re going all out for the victory. It’s Europe, it’s tough, but we want to be first in the group. Our aim is to win all of our games.

“All clubs playing in Europe have the same problems. But we have a squad to cope with it. We have double options in every position.

“If I have to rotate, because of injuries or suspensions, then I will. I have different options and that’s good.”

Lennon – “Everyone is going to have to play brilliantly, at the top of their game tonight. We’re going to have to keep the ball better than we did in the first 30 minutes of the first game.

“We only really started to look like ourselves when we scored and then United looked a little bit rattled.

“Martial and Rashford gave them fresh impetus and there’s nothing you can do about that, really. We’re going to have to hang in there for periods, we are going to have to suffer.”

60 Mins: TEAM NEWS IS IN!!!

Cristiano Ronaldo leads the attack, with Antony Martial sidelined through injury, as the Portuguese superstar aims to score in back-to-back games for the first time this season.

Omonia boss Neil Lennon makes five changes from the team which lost to United last week with first choice keeper Faiano Freitas sidelined through injury.
