Marseille vs. Tottenham live score, updates, highlights & lineups from key Champions League match

There are few games as finely poised in the Champions League this week as the decider taking place at the Stade Velodrome, where both Marseille and Tottenham will be playing for survival in the competition and qualification to the knockout rounds.

Marseille need a win at all costs to guarantee themselves a place in the Round of 16, while any other result would see the French club eliminated. They already lost to Spurs in their first encounter back in September, succumbing to two late goals by Richarlison which came after a red card shown to Marseille center-back Chancel Mbemba.

Meanwhile, Spurs can advance with either a win or a draw after dramatically being denied qualification last time out because of a late disallowed goal against Sporting Lisbon.

But Antonio Conte’s side will surely want to close out Group D as winners in order to ensure they’re one of the seeded clubs in Monday’s Round of 16 draw, and only a victory would lock up the top spot. The only problem is Spurs have never won on French soil in this competition, going winless on six occasions.

Marseille boss Igor Tudor, whose side will start the evening in last place in Group D, has pointed out that the French club would have gladly signed up for this scenario when the group stage campaign started. Their knockout round destiny is in their own hands at their raucous home field of the Stade Velodrome.

Marseille vs. Tottenham live updates, Spurs going through as it stands

54 mins: Goal! Clement Lenglet rises to a free kick from the left and his header is pinpoint precise, right down by the base of the post and in! Excellent comeback!

52 mins: Spurs look like they have had the proverbial half-time rocket, they are much more purposeful

49 mins: Close! The ball flashes across from the right after a run from Rodrigo Bentancur and Harry Kane is denied by a faint touch from keeper Lopez! Spurs best chance so far, and they have to score to go through.

46 mins: We are under way again, and Emerson Royal is on for Ryan Sessegnon as Spurs try to drag this back.

Half time: Oh dear…

Half time: Marseille 1-0 Spurs

45 mins +7 mins: Harry Kane shoots from range and the Marseille keeper plays safe to concede a corner, which Spurs make nothing of.

45 +5 mins: Seven minutes were added on due to the long injury stoppages earlier.

45 mins+1: GOAL! Marseille deservedly lead! Chancel Mbemba rises to a quickly-taken corner at the back post and he slams a powerful header past Hugo Lloris, squeezing it in just inside the post.

44 mins: A draw suits Spurs fine, but they are sailing close to the wind – the ball is hardly out of their own half at the moment. Marseille are relentless.

41 mins: Sporting Lisbon are ahead against Eintracht Frankfurt, so as it stands they are top of the group and Spurs are second. Samuel Gigo throws himself at a corner in front of Hugo Lloris but heads well wide.

37 mins: Spurs win their first corner but home keeper Pau López is fouled by Eric Dier and Marseille clear with a free kick.

33 mins: Save! Jordan Veretout latches onto a loose ball on the left of the area and unleashes a rasping shot that Hugo Lloris touches away to his left! Excellent stuff all round.

31 mins: Lucas Moura has moved up alongside Harry Kane by the looks of it, neither has seen much of the ball so far so maybe the change might get Spurs going a bit.

29 mins: Yves Bissouma is on for the Korean forward, let’s see how that changes the shape.

27 mins: Son-Heung Min is guided off down the tunnel, and there’s no substitute as yet.

25 mins: Chancel Mbemba and Son-Heung Min clash in midair and the Spurs striker needs some prolonged treatment for a bang to the face. He looks a bit dazed.

21 mins: Close! Jonathan Clauss shoots across goal and Lloris opts to watch it roll past his far post. It is all Marseille at the moment.

18 mins: Boom! Fireworks go off around the ground, and on the pitch the hosts are in charge with Alexis Sanchez turning and forcing a corner with a snap-shot that Hugo Lloris has to fist away.

13 mins: Marseille are the same shape with Gigot as Bailly, and they are still the better side with Ben Davies making an important interception in his own area.

9 mins: Eric Bailly limps off sadly and Samuel Gigot replaces him.

8 mins: Marseille have started furiously, Spurs have yet to settle but they are holding firm. It looks like the hosts are making an injury replacement, which might disrupt them.

3rd min: Chance! Alexis Sanchez nips across Clement Lenglet and gets a glancing header that skims past Hugo Lloris and wide!

1st min: As well as the noise, Spurs have to deal with heat – it is 78 degrees in the ground tonight.

And we are under way! Fantastic atmosphere – and that is with one end closed due to UEFA restrictions!

10 mins from kickoff: The noise inside the Stade Velodrome is, predictably, incredible – it is going to be very hostile for Spurs tonight, a proper old-fashioned away in Europe experience. Not long to go now!

20 mins from kickoff: It’s a ‘Nessun Dorma’ kind of night in Marseille – none shall sleep…

25 mins from kickoff: Almost anything is possible tonight, in a footballing sense; here’s a rundown of what could happen …

40 mins from kickoff: Now, that is a decent view in one of Europe’s great stadiums!

60 mins from kickoff: Here’s how the teams line up tonight.

120 mins from kickoff: Hello, and welcome to The Sporting News’ live coverage of Tottenham’s crunch clash with Marseille. It’s set to be a nervy night for Spurs fans as they look to avoid a shock exit at the group stage of this year’s competition.

Marseille vs Tottenham prediction, betting odds

Tottenham have previously defeated Marseille in London through two goals from the now-absent Richarlison, and they are the favourites to win in France without being odds-on this time.

Marseille spurned a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 at Strasbourg on Saturday, ensuring they have not won for four games running. Prior to that, OM lost at Eintracht Frankfurt on Champions League Matchday 5 and were beaten at home by Lens and away at PSG, conceding the only goal of the game in the latter two matches.

Prediction: Marseille 1, Tottenham 2
