The reigning Super Bowl champion LA Rams season has gone off the rails in the first half of the 2022 campaign. Sean McVay’s squad sits at 3-5, three wins off the first-place Seahawks.
And ahead of a Week 10 matchup with the Cardinals, things may get a whole lot more difficult for Los Angeles: starting quarterback Matthew Stafford has entered concussion protocol, McVay told reporters. A team spokesperson confirmed that Stafford was placed in protocol on Tuesday.

Stafford, who took four sacks and eight QB hits during the Rams’ 16-13 loss to Tampa Bay in Week 9, has struggled this year. So far, he’s thrown eight picks to just eight touchdowns. However, his potential absence could loom large without the presence of an established backup option.

Matthew Stafford injury update
Per McVay, Stafford suffered the ailment during last week’s defeat to the Bucs. Rams medical personnel followed up with Stafford and determined that he should be placed in concussion protocol.

“It’s more importantly about the person, then the player, in these types of things, as we know,” McVay said. “Nobody is more of a competitor and wanting to be out there with his teammates than Matthew.
He’s in the protocol. We’ll take it a day at a time with him.”
Who is Matthew Stafford’s backup?
With Stafford’s status looking uncertain for Sunday’s game, Los Angeles may have to turn to backup John Wolford, who is listed as QB2 in the Rams depth chart. Wolford has only seen the field twice in the regular season, throwing zero touchdowns and two interceptions.
Los Angeles’ QB3, Bryce Perkins, is also in the mix, although he hasn’t featured in a regular season game yet at this point in his career.
