MediaTek Dimensity 9200+ Aims to Level Up Flagship Phone Performance

MediaTek and Qualcomm are in a constant battle when it comes to the flagship phone processor space, and MediaTek’s latest move is the Dimensity 9200+.

It takes everything great about MediaTek’s 9200 flagship chip and overclocks it to create something more powerful for gaming and general smartphone usage.

MediaTek’s most significant upgrade comes to the clock speeds. The 9200+ has one ultra-core Arm Cortex-X3 running at up to 3.35GHz, three Arm Cortex-A715 cores running up to 3.0GHz, and four Arm Cortex-A510 efficiency cores pushing 2.0GHz. That main ultra-core is the most considerable upgrade from the 9200, which had up to 3.05GHz. The A715 and A510 cores are 200MHz faster, which isn’t a huge difference but could still benefit smartphone makers.

Smartphone gaming is consistently growing, and more graphically intense games are constantly arriving. As such, MediaTek says that it increased Immortalis-G715 GPU’s performance by 17%.

While the 9200+ is an overclocked version of its predecessor, MediaTek says it maintains the same battery efficiency, which is arguably just as important as the raw processing power.

Everything else about the new chip—including the modem, ISP, and APU—is the same as the previous version. While it features some nice upgrades, it’s important to note that this isn’t a fundamental change to the chipset like we saw with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. Though more powerful, it’s technically still an overclocked Dimensity 9200.

The first phones to feature the MediaTek 9200+ are set to launch later in May, so we’ll be able to test the chip very shortly. The company didn’t announce any specific devices, likely leaving that for the phone makers to reveal.
