Two straight wins would be exactly what Mexico manager Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino needs to work in relative peace in the final months before the kickoff of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. To do that, El Tri will need to overcome Colombia at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. on Tuesday.
Colombia won’t be heading to the World Cup, falling just short during South American World Cup qualifying and they won’t have anything to lose when they take the field with familiar faces James Rodriguez, Juan Cuadrado, and Radamel Falcao manning the attack.
That might be the most dangerous kind of opponent for Mexico, especially with Los Cafeteros coming off a 4-1 win over Guatemala in their last outing.
Mexico also won, 1-0 over Peru on Saturday, but they weren’t exactly convincing in that match and only scored the lone goal in the final minutes. El Tri struggled to create dangerous scoring chances, and the Hirving ‘Chucky’ Lozano game-winner only came after a deflected set-piece fell perfectly to the Napoli forward.
El Tri open their World Cup campaign against Poland on Nov. 22, and six days before that match it will face Sweden in a tuneup game in Girona, Spain. The final World Cup squads will be due on Monday, November 14.
