Mexico have been to the Round of 16 in seven straight World Cup tournaments, but if they don’t win — and perhaps win big — against Saudi Arabia, they will be looking at a group exit that El Tri hasn’t experienced at a World Cup since 1978.
Anything but a win would see Mexico eliminated. In the meantime, Mexico fans will be keeping an eye on the other match between Argentina and Poland.
A victory for Mexico coupled with a Poland win would see El Tri automatically qualify for the Round of 16. But a Poland loss or draw would mean tiebreakers come into play and the only way to guarantee they win those tiebreakers is by beating Saudi Arabia by four goals.
But Saudi Arabia will also be on a quest for a Round of 16 berth for only the second time in six World Cup appearances and first since 1994. The Falcons, who secured a famous 2-1 upset of Argentina in their opener only to lose 2-0 to Poland in their next game, have been one of the surprises of the tournament and El Tri will know they’re a threat to cause another upset.

Mexico vs Saudi Arabia live updates, highlights from 2022 World Cup
84th min: Poland by the way have picked up another yellow card, their fifth of the tournament, to Mexico’s seven. So El Tri either need to score a third goal in these final six minutes plus added time, or hope for a late flurry of Poland cards against Argentina.
82nd min: Lozano turns on the after-burners and is halted right on the edge of the Saudi penalty area. Free-kick. Lozano touches it to Luis Chavez, but the wall does its job on this occasion.
78th min: So close again for Mexico! Hirving Lozano lays the ball into the path of Uriel Antuna, but his toe-poke is saved.
77th min: That’s the last contribution Martin and Pineda will make. They are being replaced by Raul Jimenez and Charly Rodriguez.
76th min: Another chance for El Tri as Henry Martin sets up Orbelin Pineda on the edge of the area, but he curls it wide of the right post.
72nd min: Luis Chavez is lining up another free-kick, about 25 yards out in a central position. It’s another clean strike by the Mexican maestro and is heading for the top-left corner, but Al-Owais dives to beat it away.
70th min: What a chance for Mexico! El Tri should be 3-0 ahead but Henry Martin lashes his left-foot volley wildly over from no more than eight yards.
66th min: Close! Hirving Lozano gets a shot away but Mohamed Al-Owais gets down well to his right to make the save. Mexico still searching for that vital third goal…
64th min: Argentina have gone 2-0 up against Poland. That means Mexico are level on points and goal difference (see table above), but Poland are ahead at the moment by dint of having fewer yellow cards – four to Mexico’s seven!
56th min: Is this a third goal for Mexico? Hirving Lozano has the ball in the net after a one-two with Henry Martin, but Martin was offside. El Tri need one more to draw level with Poland, currently in second place, on points and goal difference.

52nd min: AND MEXICO HAVE ANOTHER! A brilliant free-kick from Luis Chavez, who bends it left-footed over the wall and into the top-right corner from 25 yards. What a strike!

47th min: Argentina have taken the lead against Poland in the other game.
46th min: We’re back underway at the Lusail Stadium.
It’s still goalless in the other game in Group C by the way, with Poland holding Argentina after that Lionel Messi penalty miss. So as things stand, nothing has changed and both these teams are going out. A goal for either side would change things though…
Halftime: Mexico 0-0 Saudi Arabia
45th+5 min: Big chance for Saudi Arabia! Sultan Al-Ghanam gets to the right byline and sends in a sumptuous cross but Ali Al-Hassan heads it wide of the left post. Close, but no cigar.

45th+3 min: Hirving Lozano hares down the right wing but blazes his cross over the heads of everyone. More composure needed there by the Napoli man.
45th min: We’re into six minutes of time added on.
44th min: More pressure from Mexico but as Alexis Vega cuts inside onto his right foot, his shot is smothered by the Saudi defence, which has been excellent so far. Jesus Gallardo bangs it back into the area, and Luis Chavez tries his luck, but to no avail. Saudi Arabia holding firm.
39th min: Do we have a goal in the other game in this group? No! Lionel Messi’s penalty for Argentina is saved by Poland keeper Wojciech Szczesny! As you were…
36th min: Ali Al-Bulayhi is unable to continue after that clash with Lozano and Riyadh Sharahili is on in his place.
34th min: Luis Chavez nutmegs Ali Al-Hassan with a lovely bit of skill and the Saudi midfielder brings him down. English referee Michael Oliver gets his yellow card out.
30th min: Bit naughty from Hirving Lozano as he tangles with Ali Al-Bulayhi as he ushers a long ball into touch. The Saudi defender is in some discomfort.
27th min: It’s all Mexico at the moment. Brilliant ball in from the right from Hirving Lozano and Pineda stretches to get his head to it at the far post, but it bounces off Sultan Al-Ghanam to safety. Dangerous times for the Green (playing in white tonight) Falcons.

25th min: Another good attack from Mexico and it’s Orbelin Pineda on the end of it this time, but Abdulelah Al-Amri is out to him swiftly and takes the sting off his right-foot effort.
22nd min: Decent spell of pressure from Mexico but it ends with rather a tame volley from Luis Chavez from outside the area. That’s not going to trouble Mohamed Al-Owais from there.
15th min: First yellow card of the game goes to Mexico’s Edson Alvarez for a late challenge on Hassan Tambakti.

12th min: Chance for Saudi Arabia here as Saud Abdulhamid is bundled over on the edge of the box. Free-kick.
7th min: Dangerous ball into the Saudi box which Hirving Lozano is onto, but Al-Owais is again in the right position to parry it under pressure amid a crowd of bodies.
4th min: Mexico striker Alexis Vega gets in behind the Saudi defence and stabs an effort goalwards, but Mohamed Al-Owais is out quickly to deflect it away. Good goalkeeping.
2nd min: Early sight at goal for Mexico’s Luis Chavez, but he drags his left-foot shot wide of the right post.
1st min: Raucous atmosphere as the game gets underway. Both teams have a sizeable support in the crowd.
5 mins from kickoff: The teams are out on the pitch at the Lusail Stadium, and it’s time for the anthems.
10 mins from kickoff: Can Mexico maintain their proud record of reaching the Round of 16 in each of the last seven World Cup finals? They also made the quarterfinals in 1970 and 1986.

15 mins from kickoff: Luis Chavez could provide the spark for Mexico against Saudi Arabia. So far he ranks first amongst his teammates for:
- chances created (three)
- successful crosses (five)
- passes played into the box (13).
30 mins from kickoff: Across their previous 18 World Cup outings, Saudi Arabia have only ever kept one clean sheet.
In fact, amongst all sides to play 10 or more tournament matches, they have the worst clean sheet ratio (6%).
45 mins from kickoff: And here is the Mexican lineup.
Three changes from the side which lost to Argentina. Jorge Sanchez, Orbelin Pineda and Henry Martin come into the starting 11, with Nestor Araujo, Hector Herrera and Andres Guardado dropping out.

1 hr from kickoff: The Saudi Arabia team is out.

1 hr 45 mins from kickoff: It’s all over in Group D, meaning Mexico and Saudi Arabia have prospective opponents. If the Saudis win tonight, they could top Group C and face Australia in the last 16. The Socceroos stunned a much-fancied Denmark side to take second spot behind France. Despite being beaten 1-0 by Tunisia, Didier Deschamps’ side will take on the Group C runners-up, meaning they represent a dubious best-case scenario for Mexico.
2hr 15 mins from kickoff: Mexico might look to Pachuca midfielder Luis Chavez to provide their spark once again this evening. So far in Qatar he ranks first amongst his teammates forr chances created (3), successful crosses (5) and passes played into the opposition box (13).
2 hrs 40 mins from kickoff: The next opponents for Mexico and Saudi Arabia, should they progress to the last 16, will come from Group D. France are more or less home and hosed as group winners, hence Didier Deschamps’ decision to make nine changes against Tunisia. Wahbi Khazri gave the North African side the lead against Les Bleus, to put them up to second place in the group. But then Mathew Leckie put Australia ahead against a much-fancied Denmark side. If things stay that way, the Socceroos will be the opponents for the Group C winners.
3 hrs 15 mins from kickoff: Whatever happens, Saudi Arabia was always have that historic win over Argentina as a memory to cherish from this World Cup. Here’s a reminder of the two men who made themselves national heroes for life.
3 hrs 45 mins from kickoff: The game within the game is going to be the fan split at the Lusail Stadium. Mexican fans have shown up in big numbers, as have the Saudi Arabians. A home-field type atmosphere could help either side.
