Microsoft Experiments With Using ChatGPT to Answer Bing Search Queries

Microsoft is attempting to improve the quality of Bing search results by integrating OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot.

As Bloomberg reports(Opens in a new window), people familiar with the plans claim Microsoft has spent several months integrating ChatGPT into the Bing search engine. By doing so, responses to search queries can include more conversational and contextual answers. Overall, the quality of Bing’s search results is expected to show a marked jump in quality and usefulness if and when this integration goes live.

For now, Microsoft is continuing to test how accurate ChatGPT can be with the results offered. A public release is still thought to be several months away and is likely to be done in stages and to small groups of users at first.

Microsoft is clearly hoping ChatGPT will prove effective enough to draw more users to its search engine, which currently holds around a 3.3% share(Opens in a new window) of the wordlwide search engine market.

The OpenAI research laboratory has had close ties with Microsoft for several years. Back in 2016, OpenAI adopted Microsoft Azure as its primary cloud platform. Then in 2019, Microsoft invested $1 billion in OpenAI to fund the research and development of artificial general intelligence (AGI).

ChatGPT made a huge impact on social media late last year when it appeared to offer almost human-like responses to questions and can hold a decent conversation. Anything too complex and the cracks start to appear, but as with all AI, it will continue to evolve and improve.
