MLB, sports world reacts after Yankees’ Aaron Judge hits AL record-setting 62nd home run

Aaron Judge smacked his 62nd home run of the season against the Rangers Tuesday night, breaking Roger Maris’ Yankee and American League record.

Judge hit the record-breaking blast off of right-hander Jesus Tinoco. The ball swirled through the Arlington night sky, eventually landing a dozen rows or so behind the left field wall. Judge trotted around the bases with a beaming smile on his face, aware of his new place in baseball immortality.

It’s been a difficult journey for Judge in recent weeks. After hitting moonshots like they were going out of style, the soon-to-be free agent saw his slugging opportunities dry up after smashing No. 61. Judge hadn’t hit one out the yard in five games prior to Tuesday’s matchup, sparking concerns that he might not be able to claim that magical record for his own.

It seemed the pressure started to weigh on Judge himself. Cameras caught Judge slamming his batting helmet into a cubby partway through the first leg of New York’s doubleheader with Texas.

Nonetheless, the immediate response across the sporting world following Judge’s trot around the bases was admiration. The towering superstar put the cherry on top of one of the greatest batting seasons in baseball history. And he did it in the pinstripes. A match made in heaven:
