Mum takes to TikTok to share her Christmas saving hack

Households across the nation will be looking for ways to cut back on costs over the festive period, with rising energy bills expected to squeeze household budgets even further this winter.

Christmas is one of the most expensive times of the year, as families fork out extra on food, decorations and presents for loved ones.

But those concerned about costs this December amid rising bills may be in luck, since one money-saving mum has taken to TikTok to share her secret to keeping costs low.

The top tip involves buying goodies as early as September and gradually building a box of gifts until December.

Posting under the acronym @the_willow_farm, the clip shows the mum filling a large carboard box with a selection of goodies – including Mini Cheddars and fun-sized cereal boxes.

She says: “So each time we go into a shop from September to December I buy an extra couple of treats and out them in the box,” adding “they’ll all be in date by December.”

“And then in the final week of Christmas we open it up and we can take a look at what goodies we’ve got and it just makes it a little bit cheaper at Christmas.”

The TikTok has since garnered an impressive 478,000 views and been flooded with comments by inspired viewers.

One commented: “I have a Christmas cupboard! My mum used to do it as well.”

A second said: “I just started this after seeing your first video! Amazing idea especially with costs rising.”

A third added: “Great idea.”

Meanwhile, a fourth wrote: “FANTASTIC idea that I’m going to copy!”

Others took to the comments to reveal that they have been doing the same for years, and confirmed that the hack does in fact work, keeping costs over the festive period low.

One user said: “I’ve been doing that for years. It makes Xmas much easier.”

Another added: “Done this for years it’s the best thing and does make such a difference.”

The hack comes at a good time, as struggling households will be looking to cut back on costs before energy bills rise again next week under the new price cap.

PM Lizz Truss’ Energy Price Guarantee will come into force from October 1, meaning a typical household in Britain will pay no more than £2,500 a year on their energy bills for thee next two years.

But while the freeze at £2,500 is notably lower than Ofgem’s energy price cap, it is still considerably higher than last winter’s rates which sat at £1,277.
